Assuming of course that some of us folks here do enjoy the odd session of button bashing on the PC/Console. I was lucky enough to get a Playstation 3 for my birthday last week and so I’ve been enjoying Stranglehold, Devil May Cry 4, Uncharted: Drake’s Fortune and Ninja Gaiden Sigma. The main hook for me in owning a PS3 comes in the form of Metal Gear Solid 4 - of which the more I see the more I’m anticipating the release next month.

So what are you guys playing/what would you recommend?

First, I’m a PC-player.

I’d love to own a console or two (or three, or four...) but the sad thing is, now that I finally have the money to buy the toys I like, I no longer have the time to fully dedicate myself to them!

Being a PC-player has its pros and cons. We all know the cons: desktops can be as unique as a fingerprint (especially after tinkering with them) and this creates huge compatability issues with software, hardware and operating systems. Trying to keep your hardware up-to-date so you can play the newest games is almost prohibitively expensive.

But look at the pros.
Once you have a medium-strong machine which works, any game released last year or before that will:
- run impossibly smooth
- look better than when it was released
- will almost invariably be cheaper than 20 USD

And that’s a damn big catalogue. Stores in the Netherlands now offer “Just Cause” for 6.50 EUR (10 USD), and a compilation of “Rome: Total War” and “Medieval 2: Total War” for even less!

Best value for money ever: “Morrowind” with all expansions for a paltry 3 EUR!
OK, that’s a seven year old game I hear you say, but it still looks good enough to not hurt your eyes (it’s even still DAMN pretty on occasion) and content-wise it’s the biggest bang for your buck you can imagine, especialy if you start fiddling with online content to spice things up a bit.

These are games that look insanely good on what is today a cheap system.
First person shooters like “Fear”, “Prey”, “FarCry” and “Painkiller” will run fine on resolutions which until recently couldn’t be seen on consoles.
Real-time Strategy games are specifically well-suited to run on the PC-platform and to be played with a keyboard and mouse.

I agree that the great divide is blurring now that consoles have successfully been offering high-res, online content and gaming networks. Whenever I enter a living room where people are playing console games I’m eager to join, I’m very impressed with all three major new systems.

So what am I playing now?

-Prince of Persia: the Two Thrones
-Just Cause (just ‘cause it’s so pretty, and the game is silly fun)
-Rome: Total War
-Peter Jackson’s King Kong: the game of the Movie
-Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas (getting some of those stats maxed, for fun)
-Halflife 2: Episode 2 (left it for a couple of months, just picked it up again and I like it!)
-Portal (fifth runthrough, second time with commentary, it still makes me giggle)

Not a PC gamer, but I do love console gaming.  Playing a lot of Mario Cart Wii right now now.  It’s fun, a little bit of a let-down - complaints about the over-abundance of race-altering power-ups have NOT been exaggerated.  Still, having a good time and love the online component.  Still playing a lot of Geometry Wars on the Wii, too.

Will be picking up GTA IV for the 360 sometime soon.  Not sure I’m quite ready for the time commitment involved to really make the most of the game.  Finally finished Halo 3 recently - seemed pretty stale after Gears of War and Bioshock.  Still playing through Call of Duty 4.

Looking forward to MGS 4 and the new Alone in the Dark.

If there are enough gamers on the board we should think about getting some online groups going - I’m on both Xbox Live and PSN, and am playing what limited titles there are for the Wii online (’til Nintendo starts charging - argh).

I’ve been outta the game playing thing for awhile now...Kingdom Hearts 2 was my last hurrah but recently I’ve been working my way back in with Phoenix Wright 2 on the DS.

I will by a PS3 soon because I’m dying to get GTA4...it’s not here in Japan....anybody know how I can order a US copy? Last time I checked, Amazon won’t ship software outside the states...and the Aussie/ NZ version has elements cut out from the U.S.

Then there’s the whole 60GB/ 40GB thing...I know the new 40GB is a newer, better console but you can’t play PS2 games right?
Isn’t it also missing other tech stuff?

I’m also looking forward to....
Ghostbusters [Hell Yeah.....God...please don’t suck hard like ‘The Thing’...uggghhh...made me want to punch my colon]
Resident Evil 5
...maybe Silent Hill 5 but Konami isn’t doing it...so I’m wary :(

Any recommendations for PS3?

In regards to PC gaming...like it but I was raised with a controller in my hand...so the Keyboard just confuses my poor little mind too much...which sucks, as the PC is great for games.

EDIT; Oh, BTW...I’m curious about Metal Gear 4...it’s almost about to be released here in the land of the rising sun.
I’m a fan of the series but I know some people who worked on this and some things I heard got me down. I’ll check it, I mean...c’mon...the end of Snake but I’m not confident.

Never did MMORPGs, couldn’t liberate the time to do the subscription fee justice.

Until I found out there are free ones as well!
So I downloaded the Shaiya client, made an account, and started to play around a bit.

OK, so I now understand why Everquest was called Evercrack. Shit, this is addictive! And I’m very, very impressed with what you can get for free these days, especially when I started jumping gates and discovered the many other worlds…

And this game certainly got the looks.

Only Wii Fit at the moment.  The animated weight-scale mascot dude in Nintendo’s somewhat novel exercise/trainer/game is hilarious as it has the EXACT same voice as the motor bike in David Worth’s WARRIOR FROM THE LOST WORLD.  I mean, they could almost sue! smile

No sign of Fred Williamson, Donald Pleasance or the bald Star Trek The Motion Picture girl yet though…

Any recommendations for PS3?

Really enjoyed UNCHARTED - not unlike a sophisticated TOMB RAIDER, but when you think about it that’s a pretty good idea.

The only other PS3 exclusive I’ve played is RESISTANCE, which was fantastic.  Sequel is due out later this year I think (along with KILLZONE 2!).

Not an exclusive, but THE ORANGE BOX is great, too.

I just re-acquired a PS1 for Xmas, so during my down times, which are few and far between I play Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 1 & 2.  Those are the only games I have so far.  I’d rather watch a movie, honestly…

A PS1?
Then do both! Play Final Fantasy VIII, or even better: Final Fantasy VII!

Seconded, Uncharted was a real pleasure to play through. I just finished Assassin’s Creed last night and as repetitive and slightly choppy the framerate is on the PS3, it’s a pretty immersive world...the scale is amazing. Next week Metal Gear 4...surely an essential purchase for anyone who has a PS3 - it’s the reason I got one.

I checked out the Japanese Box Cover and what not for Uncharted.

You’re right...it does look like a more solid and mature Tomb Raider.
What’s the story like? Involving or am I looking at a fun action game?

What’s the gameplay time on this thing?

I’m this close to getting the PS3 [and the US GTA4] so I need to start checking out titles.
What’s Army Of Two like?
Better than Killzone?

Thanks for the recommendation for Resistance, but it really looks exactly the same as Killzone and while I loved that game, once completing it...I never looked at it again.

The Army of Two single player cmpaign is extremely short, you can beat it in about 5 hours and your AI partner is pretty boring. Only worth getting if you have someone online to play along with.

The story in Uncharted isn’t bad - it doesn’t reach Bioshock (which, when it comes to the PS3 later this year, I can’t recommend enough) levels of storytelling but it is fairly well-developed.

You’ll spend a decent amount of time with the game - maybe 20 hours if you play through all the little details (which I like doing!).  I’d say 8 - 10 hours if you hurry through on one of the easier settings.

Lost Planet (played it on the 360, but it’s now out on the PS3) was a pleasant surprise - 3rd person shooter with some neat elements (there are mech suits you use for different sections; you’re on a frozen planet, so you’re tasked with finding heat sources as much as you are killing enemies).  I think the price has come down on it quite a bit.  Might be a better bet than Army of Two - I’ve heard exactly what BtoFu says about it above from some other folks, too.

Picked up Boom Blox for the Wii - holy crap is that game fun.  Possibly the best use of the motion interface since Wii Sports - it’s really well-integrated, not tacked on at all.

Sweet.

Thanks guys.

I was curious about Lost Planet so now I’ll check it out. I’m a single player kinda guy...the whole online thing hasn’t won me over yet [again, sounding like a 74 year old] so if the single player/ co-op is short for Army Of Two, I’ll skip.

Yeah...I’m looking forward to Bioshock so much....especially now that Verbinski is doing the film version.

Now if only Mass Effect would come to PS 3...I’d be in Heaven.

I just picked up my very own white PS3.

I had to kill several small life forms along the way but I eventually got me’ treasure.

I picked up Fall Of Man based on your comments [and it was cheap].

Nice Game and my girl likes it too.

I was quite chuffed, as I thought the game would be solely in Japanese, despite being made in the U.K.
It’s not easy to get imports in Japan but for some reason, the game is fully in English, not a symbol of Japanese to be found anywhere.
Maybe my PS3 is set to English?

Now, I await GTA 4...and some Blu Rays....god....do I have to re-buy my entire DVD collection?
