Tuan Jim - March 22, 2008, 8:52am

Well, just went after some more SE photos - This batch is the Alien R2 UK head set, the German R2 Fistful of Dollars/Few Dollars More Box and the R2 UK Chronicles of Narnia: Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe SE.

I took shots of the new R1 LE of El Cid and the R2 Japan Premium Edition of Shinobi, but they turned out like ass.  I really need to work on getting decent lighting and focus - although I’m not sure why it’s so hard with my digital camera.  I may have to try using the kitchen floor tiles - but I’m not sure that the overhead light in there is much better.

Alien Quadrilogy Head Collection (includes the standard Quadrilogy packaging):

As far as I know it’s essentially identical to the R2J one except it didn’t come with a little Kubrick figure like the Japanese release did and the disc artwork is different.  I’ve also got to admit that this week is the first time I took it out of the box since I got it - maybe 2, 2 1/2 years ago since I’ve been traveling and moving in the army the whole time.  Disappointingly, the plastic disc holders in the quadrilogy packaging were broken in a couple spots but I may be able to glue them back - not a huge deal though.

Again, I’ve had this thing for a while in storage—I can’t actually confirm if the watch works or used to work at this stage.  I can set the time, but winding it doesn’t seem to do anything ;p Maybe it’s just me.  It’s a nice wooden box, leather “hinges” are stapled to the top and sides - the little padlock and keys actually work too.

R2 UK Chronicles of Narnia - Amazon SE—I think this one was only available through Amazon UK, but I could be mistaken.

That little blue box has a mini-flashlight/lamp.

Hopefully I’ll be able to go back and get some better shots of some of the other sets I mentioned before - also the new Sukiyaki Western Django SE - watched that one last night.

*edit* just got the Japanese R2 Premium edition of Appleseed Ex Machina and watched the HD_DVD version of that one tonight as well - sweet package.

WOW, those are mighty sweet Tuan Jim! I’ve quoted your post because it needs to be at the top of a page. cheese

Received some mighty sweet goods today, one of which was the Japanese Grindhouse Complete Box. This is one very cleverly designed edition, the only one which features the theatrical version of “Grindhouse”. It contains the following:

-Two disc edition of the longer cut of “Planet Terror”.
-Two disc edition of the longer cut of “Death Proof”.
-Two disc edition of “Grindhouse”, featuring shortened versions of “Planet Terror” and “Death Proof”, dirtied up and with all the faux trailers.

Groovy!

This is how it looks on the outside. A dirty, worn sleeve with glossy embossed letters:

Contents fully opened, all 6 discs visible:

Very well done, outstanding work…

A few posts back I wished I had more autographed discs. Well, someone was listening…

The Korean Limited Edition of Lee Myung Se’s “M” arrived. With a nice little surprise for me on the inner booklet!

The outside:

Translucent slipcover:

The insides. Everything in this set is metallic glossy, the pictures don’t really convey just how the packaging shines and reflects everything:

Scribble on the booklet! Uhm… does anyone know whose signature this is?

Well it’s either Lee Myung-se or Lee Yeon-hee’s signature. Everything after Lee ‘이’ is indistinguishable I was kinda annoyed that dvdfromkorea got a signed batch in after the intial pre-order downtime. I missed out on an autograph because, of all things, I’m too eager.

“Lee” was also as far as I got (albeit from inference rather than being able to read Korean). Either would make me happy, but I’d like to know which one it is!

I preordered this from YesAsia and they still don’t mention that some of these are signed!
For puzzle-purposes, could you show me their names in Korean?

Lee Myung-se: 이명세 and Lee Yeon-hee: 이연희. Pure headscratcher. smile

Kinda simple and nice. But also kinda pointless...both cases are exactly the same so why even bother with the box when you could fit everything in an amaray case. Not the usual Korean standard we’ve come to know and love.

I’m looking forward to my Devil’s Game LE, the photos on DVDFromKorea look promising.

no doubt M has some pretty packaging but is the movie worth the money of this set? I’ve heard a bunch of mixed things about it. I love noir… i love supernatural.... i don’t love paying $50 for a dvd… but will if the movie is that good.... so i ask those that have seen it… is it THAT good?

Opinion is mixed even within the Twitch editorial staff (as in: love! hate!), but I can give a few pointers.

First, I didn’t pay $50 but $40, and no P & P.

Second, this is what happened when I tried to watch the first 2 minutes yesterday night. Me and my wife were both very tired but I was curious to see what it looked like, seeing as how “The Duelist” was such a visual feast. Sleepy or not, we had to fight to press the stop button because what we saw intrigued us both. Amazingly 13 minutes had past before I finally managed to stop the film.
It looks just as ‘overdirected’ as Lee Myung-Se’s other movies: every single second has been tinkered with, every shot contains a visual joke or two. In lesser hands this could get annoying REAL quick, but like “The Duelist” I found it stunning. I’ll try to finish it tonight.

Just got that Grindhouse box as well. Beautiful stuff. Ard, are you going to review it on the main site?

Soon I’m hoping to start work on a box set for the Icelandic films Children and Parents (Born and Foreldrar)and I’m going to do my best to make it look fabo. The director wants a nice package but the thing is that nobody has ever done a nice SE in Iceland for any movie, not even Jar City, the most popular film ever made in Iceland got a decent release.

Hopefully I will get to do something sweet and hopefully they are willing to put some effort in it as well.

Hope to!
But I’m watching it with the missus (we’ve chosen to watch the “Grindhouse” version first and check the longer ones later), and this week each day one of us had to work late, so it takes a bit longer than I planned…

Often it pays to check out Asian Limited Editions of movies from the US and Europe, because they can be quite superior. For example, that Korean “Pan’s Labyrinth” was very very gorgeous indeed!

Here is another special one. David Lynch and Allan Smithee present: “Dune”, the Korean Limited Edition.

As is well known, David Lynch shot material for a huge epic 4-to-5 hour movie or two, but was later told to cut back to a regular size. This resulted in the theatrical version of Dune which was truncated into non-sensibility but remains one of the most interesting SF-movies from the Eighties.

You needed to have read the book to be able to follow the film.

Legends persisted of an existing longer cut. These legends turned out to be partly true when the movie was shown on television in a 190 minute cut. David Lynch wants nothing to do with that longer cut, so it is known as the “Allan Smithee” version (even though Lynch is credited under the name Judas Booth).

Fans will be fans so people wanted to own both versions. For a long time the only way to do that was to buy the Japanese Laserdisc (to the tune of $500), but recently more versions arrived. The French have a spiffy package out containing both versions of this movie, and recently in the US the longer cut was released separately (the only one which features 2,35:1 aspect ratio on the longer cut), but…

...for a while the only way to own this cheaply was the Korean Ultimate Edition.

DTS and 2.35:1 on the theatrical version: check.
Television version in 4:3 and Dolby stereo: check.
Nice set of extras: check.

And this is what it looks like:
Dune-KLE1.jpg

Getting the disc holder out of the slipcase you see some nice artwork:
Dune-KLE2.jpg

Opening the holder, the four discs spell D-U-N-E. Simple idea but nice:

Nice Dune set Aardvark. A friend of mine would kill for that (if he haven’t already..)

This isn’t exactly new or limited edition, but the 3-disc Directors Cut of Hellboy is truly a fanboys dream come true.

A nice comic-like cover:
hellboy01.jpg

A villain-front and hero-inside (great looking stuff):
hellboy02.jpg

And a nice booklet on 14 pages (not included the front and back):
hellboy03.jpg

I just felt like posting this up as I got today.

The thing that bugged me about the box art for the Director’s cut was that Mignola did not come near it and as a result we have this rather lame vector traced picture of HB. That’s why I ended up making my own cover using Mignola art.
