I’m sure that some of you have probably received an error message every now and then that says something like “You have exceeded the allowed page load frequency”.
Don’t worry… the site isn’t down or anything. It’s actually behaving normally. One of the features of our new CMS is that we can implement various methods of throttling. This is intended to make sure that our server(s) and database(s) don’t get overwhelmed by malicious scripts and other nasty things.
However, we don’t want this to get in the way of you folks having a positive experience on the site. So please let us know if the throttling is too much or becomes too much of a nuisance, so that we can make any necessary adjustments.
As with everything regarding the overhaul, thanks for your patience.
The first time I arrived at Twitch this morning, I received the error message. I had just logged in at work and hadn’t visited the new version from this IP yet. Now, I’m not certain how your throttling service works, but I believe everyone here has unique IPs when accessing the Internet, so unless it blocks multiple attempts from an IP range, I’m not sure why I would have gotten that. After a few tries, however, it let me in. Just a heads-up.

Interesting. I’ve never encountered or heard of that behavior. I’ll do some digging around and see what I can find.
Are you folks still encountering these messages? I’ve tweaked some of the site’s settings, so hopefully their appearance will be down to a bare minimum.
I’ve had this a couple of times too. A refresh banged it out of the way though. Just came up when going from one forum section to another..
Database Error: Unable to connect to your database. Your database appears to be turned off or the database connection settings in your config file are not correct. Please contact your hosting provider if the problem persists.

As he said. It just happens, it’s not when I’m doing anything special or something.
About that “Database error” message?
Right now I get that every single time I do anything in the EE-editor, in the forum or when browsing articles on the homepage.
I get it more often than not, and it takes two or three refreshes to get where I want to be. I have no doubt it will happen again when I send this post.
To avoid misunderstandings, the message indeed reads:
“Database Error: Unable to connect to your database. Your database appears to be turned off or the database connection settings in your config file are not correct. Please contact your hosting provider if the problem persists.”
I hope they’ll fix it.
Up until today it worked fine, but now WHEN it works it’s slow as hell…
Edit: with slow I mean it’s impossible to load the first page of the Masthead Gallery when accessed from the homepage. After 5 minutes half the thumbnails have appeared, after which datatraffic (to and from) totally stops.
I’ve had this problem up again too. Also the heading of each article on the main page is the same for every entry - Flash Point Review etc all have the ‘TALES FROM EARTHSEA Review’ heading.
