I didn’t really look forward to Kar Wai’s latest film. All the preliminary signs were quite bad, there was nothing that really caught my attention. Still, when it played I couldn’t pass it by.

Glad I didn’t. From the reviews I read, many are pretty negative towards the film. Normal, since Kar Wai is one of many directors “trying his luck” in America.

For me, Kar Wai is the first to truly succeed in doing that. Bollocks to all the negative reviews, he maintained his signature style and left my dazzled by the beauty on screen. Kar Wai doesn’t need Hong Kong or his Chinese cast, his films are the result of his talent.

For a complete review, you can check here:My Blueberry Nights review.

One of Kar Wai’s best films to date.

I don’t agree with the reviewers calling it a bad movie, but his best? I don’t know, Norah Jones was nice to look at and was good for the part, but at some points - during her voice overs for example - I wished Wong would’ve chosen a more experienced actress.

I think this film would be a good introduction to Wong as a director though, especially for someone not familiar with Hong Kong cinema.

It’s often when we are in love that we reveal our absolute, true selfs. That’s when we are most vulnarable. Not when we are battling aliens or giant apes. Wong Kar Wai has been trying religiously to capture these moments of absolute truth in all his films. And he has managed to make compelling works of art every time.
