Wanna Be In A Movie? Hank & Mike's Final Scene Needs Kids!

Posted by dave at 11:12am.

Posted in Film News .

Hank & Mike (Starring Chris Klein, Joe Mantegna, Thomas Michael and Paolo Mancini) is shooting their final scene this Friday in Toronto.  At 2:30pm for roughly 2 hours, they need roughly 5 - 10 kids and their pajamas.  They’ll be filmed standing on front lawns looking amazed at what they behold… If you think your child can handle such an Oscar yanking feat, send them a note at: .  Let them know if you’re available to be in a shot or two if you’re looking to do that, because they’ll actually give you the time of day…

Greg & Gentillon: Opens this weekend! Hilarity and no Celine!

Well, I’ll hand it to them, they’re really stinkin’ busy.

Finishing the shooting schedule for Hank & Mike mere days ago (they’ve got a new teaser, by the way), their first full-length: Greg & Gentillon (review here) is being propped up on Montreal and Hull this weekend by Alliance Atlantis.  Further dates for Vancouver and Toronto are soon to follow, but we’ll deal with that later, maybe we’ll just call it a tour.

Coined by some to be ‘this generation’s Spinal Tap’ and coined by me personally as the most hilarious stage duo I’ve seen in memory, Greg & Gentillon won the Discovery award at the Calgary Film Festival and was the Official Selection all over the place.  So if you find yourself in the land of the Quebecois, you now have something you must do.

Montreal (French version) – Quartier Latin
Hull (French version) – Star Cite

Now get going.

INTERVIEW: Hangin' Out with the Bunnies. The Hank & Mike Bunnies Rather.

Posted by dave at 7:13pm.

Posted in Interviews , Cult, Comedy, USA & Canada.

How’s this for a hook? In this interview, I got to type out “children”, “drugs”, midgets” and “sex” all in the same sentence.

Hank & Mike are Bunnies. Easter Bunnies.  They’re cute, they’re furry. Annnnd, they’re not putting up with your #%$& anymore.  Y’see, they’re recently unemployed. And pretty pissed off.

If you’ve ever wanted to watch a star rise, now is your chance. Years ago, running a small little comedy show, Thomas Michael, Paolo Mancini and Matthiew Klinck wrote a Hank & Mike sketch. Add a few years, films, awards and headaches later, and lo, it’s a full-length feature. Only now, instead of running it on a small local cable show, the bunnies are now castmates with Chris Klein, Joe Mantegna and (almost) Wes Bentley. All of it accomplished on their own steam.

Gaining speed they picked up after shooting the hilarious film Greg & Gentillon (review here - And which is being released in theatres in a month, by the way) and taking the Discovery Award at the Calgary Film Festival in 2005, I interrupted their rise to their dream to chat about how the hell they’re doing it and was also privileged to be the only one outside the film to be shown some raw footage. Exclusivity is grand. T’was the 14th of it’s 18 day shoot that finishes this month here in Toronto.

I arrive before Thomas and Paulo (the bunnies) and have a (free) beer with Matthiew Klinck, the director - also the director for Greg & Gentillon… And the chatter begins....

The BOA trailer strikes! -As we resist various 'Snake-Size Matters' jokes.

All righty, back on the eve of this month, we threw some beautiful looking posters from Thai’s ‘bad-ass snake’ offering, BOA your way. Well, Deknang has continued his habit of providing delectables - as we are officially slapping you with the trailer.

Even if we had more information, we wouldn’t really need to provide you with it. You have the trailer - it’s all you need. The trailer isn’t subbed and it completely, utterly doesn’t matter. Oh yes.

The trailer is in DAT format - which is a VCD encoded file - and should play just dandy on Windows Media Player without needing to change the extension.

Matt Lucas to Play Alfred Hitchcock

Posted by dave at 1:40pm.

Posted in TV , UK, Ireland, Australia & New Zealand.

Well here’s somethin’ - I just stumbled on this a second ago and I don’t see much furthur info on it beyond just: “This is happening”, so we’ll see how the whole “truth of the matter” pans out.

But it looks like Matt’s going to be (appropriately) playing the role of the Amazing-yet-Oscar-denied Alfred Hitchcock alongside Ewan McGregor in a film about Alfred’s early life in London. Digital Spy points out that the plans would dash any glimming hopes of a Season 4 of Little Britain - plans which, if I recall correctly, were questionable in the first place.

Wax On, Wax Off has Shuffled Off. Mr. Miyagi, Pat Morita dead at 73

Well, here’s a bit of crappy news. Granted, he wasn’t at the forefront of my watch list as far as actors go, but he certainly has a mainstay in my chapters of fond childhood memories. And who isn’t familiar with the whole “Wax On, Wax Off” phrase?

It looks like natural causes according to an article by the associated press. So I guess it was simply his time.  Rest Well Sensei. Thanks for the memories.

Toronto's One Minute Film Fest This Thursday

Posted by dave at 1:00am.

Posted in Film News , USA & Canada, Random Festival News.

Okay, anyone with A.D.D. listen up… This is fairly random and also something I should’ve posted ages ago.  Anyway, this past summer I had the luxury of performing in a busy Toronto theatre and, like always, mostly because artsy types won’t shut up, I met someone who turned out to be the director of development for the Toronto One Minute Film Festival.

Keeping this sucker simple, the Festival is practically fully described by rhyming off the name of it.  Under the instruction to film under the theme of “Intersections”, the One Minute Film Fest narrowed entries down to 64 - to be screened at the Bloor Cinema on Thursday, November 24th at 7:00.

The Jury:
- Cameron Bailey
- Vera Frankel and
- Alan Zweig.

All of whom I’ve never met, but I’m sure are very nice people.  (In all seriousness, they are writers and video producers whose stuff have been.. well in tons of stuff..  CBC Radio, National Gallery of Canada to name a couple.)

Tickets at the door are 10 bucks - 8 in advance..  (That’s less than 20 cents a film there kids) Check their website for more details n stuff.

'Greg & Gentillon': Hilarious Duo Snags Official Selection at Calgary and Montreal Film Festival

‘Greg & Gentillon’ presented by PeepingTom Films

Hey there kids. It’s story time. It was 3 years ago that I attended a fundraiser for a stage production a friend was running. Part of the fundraiser was a two-man routine performed by a couple of guys I had never seen before, dressed in bad leisure suits with horrible haircuts/wigs on.

What ensued however, was the funniest act performed live I had ever seen in my life. No kidding. These 2 sincere(?) French-Canadian(?) comedians(?) entertained us with a show about two guys trying SO HARD to please an audience. That blurred reality line left everyone in absolute hysterics. The routine finished, the characters exited the venue - and I never saw, or heard about them, again.  Until 2 weeks ago.

Let the Slump Begin! Horrid Film Fans, Commence Wetting Yourselves.

Commentary for a Lonely Friday:
Well, it’s that time of year again. This weekend and next are the worst weekends to make an appearance at the silver screen: Both for films and, more often than not, for ticket holders as well as studios quietly dump their scraps out of storage to make room for more caged monkeys that come up with future story lines.

Which came first, the chicken or the egg? Do people not go these weekends because the films suck? Or do the films suck, so the people don’t go?
Let’s not forget that 2 years ago this weekend, ‘Dickie Roberts’ entered the scene and took the number one spot - with a 6.6 million dollar take.  6.6??George Lucas makes more than that when he farts. And so far, the North American Box Office is in for it again. Leading the pack is “The Sound of Thunder” with our favourite “what the hell are you doing?” star, Ben Kingsley. CNN has posted a roastful review that is surprisingly jovial in its writing. They report that this flick has been sitting on the Warner shelves for 2 years waiting for the worst possible moment to release it on otherwise stupid film goers. And the Time is Nigh. I mean look at that thing, what is it? A lizard with a Gorilla head? It’s not supposed to be scary is it? It looks like a turd with a splash of colour.

Todd has made the occasional point that Ben Kingsley has made some pretty rough choices in the past while and this is looking to be his Don of all choices. I gather the entire cast was hoping this would never see the light of day, even if it is tucked into the dark corner of Labour Day Weekend.

The other headliners this weekend that you’ve never heard of are “Underclassmen” and “The Baxter”. I haven’t and won’t be seeing them, so hey, they might be good, but they may be getting their release this weekend for a reason. G’head and se e’em if you’re lonely.

Your choices lie with Constant Gardner or Transporter 2. Feel free to start a cult following with everything else.

HBO's New Series: ROME Review. Episodes 1 & 2

Posted by dave at 10:00pm.

Posted in Film & DVD Reviews , Drama.

In the vein of the Sopranos, Six Feet Under, DeadWood and other TV shows that would never see the light of day on regular ‘TV’, comes HBO’s newest offering that begins on August 28th, this monstrosity entitled Rome. And, as luck would have it, yours truly just previewed Episodes 1 and 2 - on the big screen no less (Thank you Karen and your communist company for the entrance...). So, if you’re not still angry about Carnivale, here’s what I’ve got to say about it…

Now I’m assuming I was shown 2 episodes for two reasons.. Cause one hour just ain’t enough and 2) the cast and the political mess in Italy are of large enough proportions that it simply couldn’t unravel in just one episode to wet your whistle enough to cure a thirst.

We interrupt all this “Mrs. Vengeance” chatter to revert you back to the Mr. Vengeance stuff… Ifilm’s hosting the North American Mr. V trailer. Not bad.. no “Mr. Movie Voice"… In fact, no narration at all.. just clips and basic info, flashing along in nice pretty yellow/gold lettering. Maybe some obilgatory awards mentions… and that’s it. August 19th is the listing date…
