Poster Alert! Speed Trouble at Tiffany's

Posted by Swarez at 2:50am.

Posted in Random Geek Talk .

The good folks at Mondotees are at it again with three new posters available for the public for upcoming screenings at the Alamo Drafthouse. One is a new version of Big Trouble in Little China by Tim Doyle, featuring the three Storm warriors. The second one is a poster for the upcoming Speed Racer screening created by Jesse Philips. Last but not least is a wonderful rendition of Audrey Hepburn by Diana Sudyka for Breakfast At Tiffany’s.
The Big Trouble and Speed Racer posters are glow in the dark so you might finally have some use for that blacklight in your room. Big Trouble comes in two versions but Speed and Breakfast only in one. Each poster is signed and numbered and as always extremely limited.
I can say, now that I am compulsively buying these pieces of art that they are utterly fantastic up close and personal. I can’t recommend these enough.

Now comes word that the Sundance Channel is hosting the series of short films titled Green Porno.

ATTENTION: While this is great news these shorts are only available to viewers in the United States. The shorts will be available outside of the US in July. Stupid.

Head on over and watch Isabella Rossellini do the nasty with bugs! Sundance Channel presents GREEN PORNO!

Marfa Film Festival 2008 – There Will Be Blood on the set of Little Boston

The city of Marfa, Texas, is always the kid in the back of class that wildly raises its hand when anyone states Texas is one long flat state. Sitting at an elevation of 4,685 feet, its picturesque mountain ranges and sparse signs of modern human fixtures make it an oasis and retreat from everyday life. Where else can you revel in such land that would make any Spaghetti Western fan drool with awe at the surrounding landscapes that encompass them from all sides as if they had just stepped back into time. Years ago when Paul Thomas Anderson was at his wits end trying to find a place in California to film There Will Be Blood, his location scouts came across the nearly 60,000 acre plus McGuire Ranch that sits several miles south of Marfa. It not only provided a perfect backdrop with its horizon-to-horizon views void of any modern signs of life, but it also had an unused railroad track that ran through its property. It wasn’t California yet it certainly could evoke the Bakersfield, California circa the early 1910’s that Paul Thomas Anderson envisioned for his film (view Twitch exclusive pictures from the set and day one of the Marfa Film Festival here).

Production Designer Jack Frisk and Paul Thomas Anderson scoured the McGuire Ranch dreaming up ideas for where to plant Little Boston, only to return to a location close by an old water tank that ran by the railroad track. It was at this location that Little Boston sprang to life. The current set while still standing is looking like it’s feeling the effects of the very dusty and cross heavy winds that rake across the plains. Electrical wires you would expect to see dotting around the set are nowhere to be found. When it came to building the set they found ropes looked much better onscreen.

The inaugural edition of Brazilian genre film festival RIOFAN launched yesterday and this is a notable event for a number of reasons.  The programming team has put together a stellar lineup of films - 180 in all - including a competitive section that features Twitch faves Timecrimes, La Vida Me Mata, Mirage Man and Jack Brooks Monster Slayer.  And then there are the retrospectives, one of which is dedicated to Coffin Joe and features one of the first ever public screenings of the icon’s “lost” film A Praga, which was just recently re-discovered and restored.  Very nice.  Read on for the full press release.

Udine 2008 Wrap Up!

Posted by Todd Brown at 5:43am.

Posted in Random Geek Talk , Udine 2008.

All good things must come to an end, unfortunately, and after a fantastic time at the Udine Far East Film Festival the lady-friend and I have made our way back home to Toronto.  Let me say this:  if you’re at all a fan of Asian film then this is a trip you have to plan on making at some point.  The theatre is fantastic, the hospitality stellar, the line up strong year after year and the film makers and talent are exceptionally accessible.  Adrift In Tokyo director Miki Satoshi was the happiest man in the place and well nigh ubiquitous, appearing at screening after screening and party after party with a constant smile on his face.  The lady-friend and I first came across Pang Ho-Cheung lying on the grass out front of the theatre catching some sun and ran into him continuously thereafter as he bounced from screening to screening.  Filipino director Erik Matti and Indonesia’s Joko Anwar battled it out for nicest man in the room - the lady-friend gave the edge to Anwar after he opened a few doors for her - and the whole experience was just stellar.  Darcy Paquet of KoreanFilm.org fame, incidentally, could easily be our own Kurt Halfyard’s long lost brother.  They look alike, the mannerisms and speaking voices are the same ... it would be kind of creepy if they weren’t such swell people ...

Attention UK horror fans!  We posted a little while back about the upcoming Neil Marshall event being hosted by the fine lads of the Film 4 Frightfest on May 3rd.  What we knew at the time was that all three of Marshall’s films would be screening back to back to back with Marshall and some of the cast in attendance.  Now we’ve got the full guest list.  Ready?  Take a deep breath:  Neil Marshall, Sean Pertwee, Kevin McKidd, Darren Morfitt, Chris Robson, Les Simpson from Dog Soldiers. Shauna MacDonald, Alex Reid, MyAnna Burning, Nora Jane Noone, Saskia Mulder, Natalie Mendosa from The Descent and Alexander Siddig, Craig Conway, Adrian Lester from Doomsday.

Todd says zowie.  Oh, and that handsome poster to the left?  Designed by legendary poster artist Graham Humphreys and fifty copies will be available at the event, signed by both Humphreys and Marshall.

Rolling Roadshow - Fistful of Dollars Screening Location Revealed

Posted by Blake at 11:40am.

Posted in Random Geek Talk , Cult, Western, Continental Europe & Russia.

Gather around the fireplace and dust off your hat, the location for the 2008 Rolling Roadshow Tour - Sergio Leone Edition has just announced the location for its Fistful of Dollars screening and a special treat for after the movie! I know there have been some incredible screenings of the Man With No Name Leone films before, but you would be hard pressed to find screenings as immersive as these are shaping up to be!

A FISTFUL OF DOLLARS opens with a scene of “the man with no name” (Clint Eastwood) riding into frame and stopping for well water outside an adobe farmouse. On June 6, The Rolling Roadshow and a select group of Leone fans will be gathered around the very same well in front of that very same farmhouse to watch that very same movie. The farmhouse, pictured today to the left, is now the Cortijo el Sotillo, a charming boutique hotel. We have partnered with the Cortijo el Sotillo to present this free screening of A FISTFUL OF DOLLARS, the opening film of the 2008 Rolling Roadshow Tour: the Leone Edition. Following the screening, attendees will gather at the same fireplace where Clint Eastwood so quickly “handles” Rojas men later in the film. The small hotel has only 20 rooms, so if you would like the rare treat of actually staying at the same lodging where Marisol was held captive, we recommend booking soon. Mention the Rolling Roadshow Tour and receive the promotional rate of 85€/night for a single room, 104€/night for a double room. Breakfast and taxes are included in that rate.

First Details Emerge for Fantastic Fest 2008 - Japanese Pinku & Aussie Exploitation Retrospectives!!

Posted by Blake at 1:15pm.

Posted in Random Geek Talk , Film Festivals, Random Festival News, Exploitation, Thriller, Cult, Horror, Asia, UK, Ireland, Australia & New Zealand.

I think it goes without saying we have a wicked bag of tricks ready for Fantastic Fest 2008. The first announced details for this year include announcing its retrospective sections of Japanese Pinku and Australian Exploitation films. Other highlights this year will include: a boat ton of badass Danish genre cinema and a amped-up, recreation of the classic William Castle Tingler gimmick! And yes there will be karaoke mayhem and Fantastic Feud craziness will once again spread throughout the festival. Todd alone has so much up his sleeve to delight, dazzle and thrill at this years fest that some will think he is a long lost relative of Merlin. Fantastic Fest 2008 will be pulling out all the stops to top 2007. Also be on the look out for a special June screening of Iguchi’s Machine Girl in Austin. More details after the link bump.

**Update** Alamo poster alert!! The Thing & Planets of the Apes.

Posted by Swarez at 2:30am.

Posted in Random Geek Talk , Exploitation, Cult, Horror, Sci-Fi & Fantasy.

The good folks at the Alamo Drafthouse in Austin Texas are at it again with showings of classic genre movies and of course they got fantastic looking posters to go with them. Most notable is Tyler Stout’s The Thing poster, done in the same style as his sought after Big Trouble In Little China piece. Also up for sale is a Planet of the Apes poster by Todd Slater and The Car poster by Stainboy. As before the posters are all silk screened and extremely limited. The two posters I talked about last time sold out within 36 hours so act fast if you want a piece of this. The prints for The Thing and Apes come each with their own variant that is more limited than the regular version so they go for a slightly higher price.
This is a must for all fans of film and beautiful art so please check them out at mondotees.com.

For those who missed out on the 2001 poster I talked about last time and want one, you can go to artist Jay Ryan’s own website and order a copy.

**UPDATE** If you wanted that totally awesome King Kong poster that I talked about in the first poster alert but missed out I have good news. Burlesque Design are putting this bad boy up for sale at their website today at 2 pm CST. I don’t know for sure how many there will be but these went out fast the last time they were on sale so act quickly.

Movie Poster alert!!!

Posted by Swarez at 6:08pm.

Posted in Random Geek Talk .

Isn’t this a beaut? Some of you might know this but I love movie posters. I love them so much I make them for a living (on the side really). There are a few things I love more than a striking movie poster with great graphics, color and texture. Right now I’m staring at Namoi Watts’ tear smeared face on the Funny Games remake in my movie poster light box I have on my wall, just beautiful stuff and one of the most striking designs in recent memory.
Anyway...I’m digressing. If you live in Austin Texas this is old news for you but for others out there this is a juicy tidbit. I know the Alamo Drafthouse mostly from reading AICN so I know that they have regular showings of classic films. What I didn’t know is that they make new posters for those showing. And not just some cheap crap using existing artwork. No they get graphic artist to make a brand spanking new poster and print them in very low numbers, to sell at the venue and at a place called Mondo Tees. Now I’ve only recently found out about this and today I saw that they are presenting two new silk screened posters, an inch short of a full one sheet size, for Kubrik’s 2001 and the classic King Kong. Both posters are insanely beautiful and a must for the fans of these films and fans of beautiful artwork.
Both posters are very limited so expect them to go fast, especially King Kong. SO GO NOW!!!
And while you are there check out the truly great looking Big Trouble in Little China poster by Tyler Stout, truly a work of art.
Upcoming screenings at the Alamo include The Thing, Bladerunner and Planet of the Apes so make sure you check back regularly to see what designs they have for those.

For Werewolf Hunters of the Midwest, be prepared to wait a little longer...

McAbee.jpgIt is no big secret around here that we positively adore Cory McAbee’s The American Astronaut, a retro-sci-fi-musical-western-comedy filmed in stylish black and white and featuring a fab soundtrack from The Billy Nayer Show.  And since 2005, we’ve been anxiously awaiting for the promised followup feature Werewolf Hunters of the Midwest.  It turns out that that project is on the hunt for new financing, so, someone step up please and make a few of us around here very, very happy.  Right now we are sad.

As a consolation though, dancing cowboy clones - Dancing.  Cowboy.  Clones. - will have to suffice. The Sundance Institute recently uploaded the McAbee’s short film-slash-music-video, Reno

You’ll find it in the Twitch Player after the Jump (or linked directly to the house that Redford built, below)
