Let's Try and Get Tokyo Zombie Subtitled, Shall We?

Posted by Todd Brown at 11:32am.

tokyo_zombie.jpg

You know, we like to talk and gripe a lot about what films do and don’t get subtitled release. Well, after posting that Tokyo Zombie bit earlier today Logboy dropped me a note to ask a very good question: why don’t we try to do something about it. Well, good question. Why don’t we?

There’s enough lead time with Tokyo Zombie that if we start writing in now there’s a fighting chance that we may be able to sway their decision on whether or not subtitles should be included, so let’s get writing. A few things to bear in mind when doing this sort of thing:

1. Be polite! We’re asking these people to do us a favor. The export market is not a big one for them so we need their good will.
2. Be clear and to the point! Whoever reads this will very likely not speak english as a first language. So make sure your point is perfectly clear and expressed as simply as possible.
3. Promise to buy the movie if subtitles are included! Yes, this is implied by the simple fact that you’re writing in, but be specific: an unsubtitled DVD is a lost sale. If subtitles are there, you will buy. They’re in business, after all, and if including subtitles means a better bottom line, they’ll include them.

The Ore Website and Trailer: Quality Independent Sci-Fi

Oooh ... when posting news about The Men Who Fell recently I commented on just how hard it is to find quality independent science fiction. Well, it looks like we’ve got another one to keep an eye on ...

Shot digitally on a tight budget - they plan to release it for free on the internet once completed - The Ore is a short film that shows off some pretty startling production values. This thing looks seriously impressive, excellent environments, good CG, quality character designs ... just solid on all fronts.

Sprængfarlig Bombe Trailer: New Danish Comedy From Jensen, Jensen, Kaas, and Thomsen.

spraengfarlig.jpg

Here’s one I’ve been waiting for for quite a while ...

The first trailer for Sprængfarlig Bombe has just turned up online and it looks fantastic. The bleak Danish comedy - do they make any other kind? - is written by Anders Thomas Jensen and directed by Tomas Villum Jensen (no relation though they collaborated previously on Solkongen, The Sun King) and stars Nikolaj Lie Kaas, Ulrich Thomsen, and Thomsen’s magnificent facial hair.

A synopsis:
“Tony (Thomsen) has just gotten through a sentence for violent behaviour. He promises to improve his ways and is finally granted a few hours alone with his two children. They celebrate the reunion by going to the movies to see a new film by the famous, critically acclaimed Danish director Claus Volter (Kaas). But the film is not the masterpiece it is said to be on the poster; the children are crying and Tony cannot get the money back he spent on tickets and candy. Tony does not give up; he seeks out Claus Volter in order to get an explanation and a refund. It is however easier said than done to get money out of a world-renowned filmmaker.”

Dead by Dawn Report: Zombie Jieitai Review

Here comes Richard Brunton with a look at a load of Japanese zombie splatter at Dead by Dawn ...

What a great choice for 7:30am after some bacon and egg rolls, struggling for sleep on the all nighter for Dead by Dawn...a blood filled Zombie movie. Quite frankly zombie films don’t really move me that much. They tend to be over formulaic and soaked with cliches and impossibilities. Yet that is exactly why so many people like them.

So I’m doing this one for you Zombie fans out there, and at special request of Twitch who I’m also writing these reviews for. I’m taking this one for you…

...Okay, the screening is over and I have to say I am converted. That is probably the funniest film I have seen in a long time, from the opening titles to the closing credits, it is hilarious, and it knows it.

Dead By Dawn Report: Neighborhood Watch Review

Once again Richard Brunton checks in from Dead by Dawn.

This marked the last film that I would manage to see at this years Dead by Dawn, although it was far from the last on show. The combined factors of lack of sleep, impending Monday work, and the need to write all this up were just too much to be able to sit up and watch anymore. So I chose Neighbourhood Watch as my last movie.

I wish I hadn’t. Neighborhood Watch definitely left a sour taste in my mouth, and that wasn’t just with repulsion.

Tokyo Zombie Hits DVD in July!

tokyo_zombie.jpg

Tokyo Zombie has been announced for Japanese DVD release on July 28th. So far they’re saying no English subtitles for the Asano / Aikawa starring horror comedy, but given the recent spate of Japanese films announced without subtitles that have ended up having them I wouldn’t rule it out just yet. What we really need is for some Japanese speaker out there to find back cover scans of this and Ranpo Jigoku to tell us what it says there ...

Rose D'or for Best Comedy, Peter Serafinowicz & Robert Popper's 'Look Around You'.

lookaroundyou2.jpg

Firm favourite, small show that’s well known amongst comedy fans here in the UK but which seemed to get a relatively small audience because it didn’t do the huge business on DVD of megahits like ‘Phoenix Nights’, ‘Extras’ or ‘The Office’, and one which we will recommend until we’re blue in the face - but it is a good show on so many levels. Not that this is always confirmed by a decent prize, can’t remember what it managed for itself at The British Comedy Awards, and it’s odd that this is a show which I personally (as a Brit) connect to ‘Tomorrows World’ - the now defunct BBC Science show which ran for decades - seems that this has a large international appeal and has made a connection with audiences elsewhere. Nice work then, as ‘Look Around You’ has won the Rose D’or for Best Comedy this year. Congratulations then to the team behind the show, impressive work.

Besides this, Best Sitcom predictably went to ‘Extras’ (Ashley Jensen also won best Sitcom actress) and Stephen Fry won best gameshow host for ‘Q.I’. [Source : BBC Entertainment].

Thanks, Brendon : quick off the mark in spotting ’Haze‘ has finally gone through the mighty hands of the BBFC and been passed uncut in it’s longer form.

Running time for the PAL disc will then be 49 minutes, and there’s also a making-of featurette now listed as being included as the only extra of note. Those in European territories covered by Play can get it for £11.99 and it’s not yet listed, it seems, at Amazon.co.uk. Have been checking back at the BBFC every few days because of the early nature of this release, comparatively quick after it’s recent Japanese cinema release that is, and hoping it was definite that we would get the longer version : wasn’t even listed as passed when I also checked back last Friday, exactly the day it happened to go through. Oh weel, nice spot, thanks for passing it along. Yes, it is the first appearance of the film anywhere on DVD, and it has English Subtitles of course, and it’s a 16:9 presentation, only Certificate 15.

We always appreciate nice snippets and reader reviews or whatever you care to pass along for things we’re still anticipating but you might have been lucky to get some kind of exclusive on. [Source : Filmick / BBFC].

Once again thanks are due to Peter at Ghibli World for digging these up.

Trailer have hit the web for Isao Takahata’s Gauche the Cellist - which re-issues on DVD this summer - and Kazuo Oga’s Taneyamagahara no Yoru. Oga’s film, in particular, has been the subject of much speculation as descriptions of the animation style have been vague so far, and now we get a chance to see for ourselves.
