What exactly are we looking at here, anyway?? How the #&%* can I be expected to review this piece of crap if I can’t even tell what it is?? Is it a gardening tool, a bicycle handlebar, or a murder weapon? Or all of the above? Who among could ever truly know, man. Not me. I ain’t touching that piece of junk. Nuh-uh. Perhaps some of the more, shall we say, adventurous Twitch readers will be familiar with this thing. If that’s you, then by all means enjoy this cold, mysterious bit of death on a stick. Just stay away from me with it. Seriously.

Late Night with Conan O'Brien – Episode 03/31/06 REVIEW

Conan.jpeg

Somewhere between the quaint serenade of a familiar leitmotif and the incessant shrill of an ignored car alarm lays the compelling genius that is “Late Night with Conan O’Brien”. The venerable comedy program has seen many changes since its 1993 debut on NBC, but the one vital, remaining constant is the ceaseless energy of the host himself. That host is Conan Christopher O’Brien, a former writer for “Saturday Night Live” and “The Simpsons”, this lanky Irishman seem to only recently have embraced the undisputed success he has garnered as host of this show. Obviously still smarting from the failure of “Lookwell” with Adam West, O’Brien works unrelentingly to bring crowd-pleasing comedy night after night, often times without the noticeable support of his otherwise capable writing staff who all too often phone it in. His most recent effort, the 03/31/06 episode, was just such a show. Carefully established comedy set pieces from earlier in the week were unceremoniously dropped in favor of unfunny stock drivel and added time for mind-numbingly dull guests. Another tragic shame in the greater pop culture landscape we all must inhabit.

'Tokyo Psycho'? 'Tokyo Rampage'?! Why Not 'Porno Star' by Toshiaki Toyoda?!

Not the kind of things that’s massively important in the whole scheme of things, you know, but we are a film site and this is the sort of thing which riles me and it’s an obvious place to talk about such an issue - rather than hide it in a forum where many fear to tread - so forgive the critical nature, we always try to remain fair and positive but some issues simply aren’t, and this is no more level of critical discussion and thought than I see elsewhere…

Remeber a while back I managed to spot Image Entertainment were to issue Toshiaki Toyoda’s long-awaited ’Porno Star‘ in the USA on DVD? The issue was this, that they were retitling it ’Tokyo Psycho‘ and were to release it during April 2006, and it wouldn’t have been that long after Panik House’s DVD (well, film) of the same name. Reasonably quickly the news trickled out that they were to change the name in order to avoid any potential confusion (which had already started to happen online) between the two entirely different films.

Fine, stick ’Porno Star‘ on the artwork then, hopefully maintain it on the data you use for the disc contents too; the titles on the opening of the film, for example. Nope? What’s that? ’Tokyo Rampage‘?! Blimey, what a mistake to make. Really, I am trying to think through the reasoning, can’t find a way around the possible logic of it all. Year after year people have discussed the film online as a prime example of a film that’s wanted an official release with English Subtitles, and now we get one it’s being fiddled with. I mean, if it’s a ‘Best Buy’ issue - that they might not stock a title with ‘Porno Star’ but will accept ‘Tokyo Psycho’ or ‘Tokyo Rampage’ and that cover - well you have to wonder if films just don’t occassionally get treated a little oddly (’Porno’ less acceptable than ‘Psycho’s? Death over sex? - any day), and this is one of those rare issues that goes hand-in-hand with more common ones of odd translations in subtitles, strange editing, lack of publicity and so on.

I hate to sound harsh, but this is another of those little niggling things that I know people want to disappear, and from the reactions I see in forums to the apparent trivialities I am far from alone and it actually makes for a strange impact on the market that goes way beyond the actual merits of the original issues. It just makes everything feel as though the money that’s plonked down for something that’s already expensive could not give as complete and perfect a representation of the film as could possibly be given, that things might be corrected at a later date rather now. Please, Image Entertainment, let us know why ’Tokyo Rampage‘ and not the very very familiar and recognisable ’Porno Star‘ that the core market is looking out for. I know the title isn’t representative of the content, and there’s a larger market than the core one, but it is the films title. Oh, and release date has shifted from April to August 29th 2006. What ever the title, in the end, I want the film, and that’s the important thing - just wish it was an unblemished release.

Porno Star‘ from Image Entertainment, under the title ’Tokyo Rampage‘ now. Not ’Tokyo Psycho‘.

Shim Eun-Ha Comes Back in Hur Jin-Ho's 화장 (The Cremation)

manujeol.jpg

2000’s 인터뷰 (Interview) was a strange choice for someone like Shim Eun-Ha. After the success of the TV Drama 청춘의 덫 (Trap of Youth) and Jang Yoon-Hyun’s 텔 미 썸딩 (Tell Me Something), most people expected her to star in a blockbuster like many other actresses were doing back then. But she went out and shot a Dogme film with an unknown director - Byun Hyuk of 주홍글씨 (The Scarlet Letter) - alongside Lee Jung-Jae. Quality (or lack thereof) of the film aside, that was the last time we’d see Shim Eun-Ha, one of the brightest lights in the Korean entertainment circle, grace the screen, big and small.

Many people tried to get her back during these long six years of absence, last in line Kim Jong-Hak, who offered her the lead role in the uber-blockbuster TV Sageuk 태왕사신기 (The Great King), and recently she was even offered the leading role in the Wuxia 중천 (The Restless), which she turned down once again. Why come back to entertainment, when you just married? Even better, Shim Eun-Ha just became a mother, so a return looked quite unlikely. But most fans were still harboring a little dream, the selfish hope she’d finally come back and grace us again with her charm. Until Hur Jin-Ho entered the picture. It certainly wasn’t the film which made her a star in Korea, but Hur’s 8월의 크리스마스 (Christmas in August) changed it all for the young star, who after the 1998 classic started being recognized as a good actress first, an idol later. Hur even tried to get her back for last year’s 외출 (April Snow), role which eventually went to Son Ye-Jin. But after years of persuading, he’s finally done it. It’s expected Shim will sign a contract either tomorrow or the day after to accept the leading role in Hur’s upcoming melodrama 화장 (The Cremation), her first film in six years.

The film is adapted from Kim Hoon’s short novel of the same name, which won a Lee Sang Literature Prize in 2003. Produced by Manujeol Entertainment, shooting for the film will start in late Summer after the male lead is cast, for a Winter release. Of course we’ll keep following this one, and I’m sure I’m not the only one who jumped on his seat the moment he learned about this. Good things come to those who wait…

UPDATE

...unless it’s April 1st, and we’re playing with you. Manujeol (만우절) indeed means April Fools’ Day in Korean. But even though it certainly will not star Shim Eun-Ha (who sadly seems retired for good, now more than ever), The Cremation is really Hur’s next film, and is really adapted from a short novel by Kim Hoon. Now we can always hope, can’t we?

Trailer for Ryûichi Hiroki's IT'S ONLY TALK (YAWARAKAI SEIKATSU), starring Shinobu Terajima, Etsush

Posted by The Gomorrahizer at 12:59pm.

only_talk.jpg

The official website for Ryûichi Hiroki’s It’s Only Talk (Yawarakai seikatsu) is now functional, and there’s a downloadable trailer for the movie on it. The movie is scheduled to be screened at the 15th Philadelphia Film Festival (PFF) on April 6th at 5:00 p.m. and April 7th at 12:00 p.m.. Shochiku Co. Ltd. (Shôchiku K.K.) plans to release it theatrically in Japan in June.

The screenplay for It’s Only Talk was written by Haruhiko Arai, based on the novel Ittsu onrî tôku by Akiko Itoyama. The movie stars Shinobu Terajima, Etsushi Toyokawa, Shunsuke Matsuoka, Tomorowo Taguchi, Satoshi Tsumabuki, Akira Emoto, and Nao Ômori.

Here’s a description of It’s Only Talk from the PFF website: “Festival favorite Ryuichi Hiroki (Vibrator, L’Amant) returns with this sensitive, low-key portrait of an emotionally unstable woman and the four men in her life. ¶ Director Ryuichi Hiroki has become a Philadelphia Film Festival staple in recent years: his film Vibrator screened here two years ago, and Mr. Hiroki attended our fest last year with his movie L’Amant. His newest work, It’s Only Talk, harkens back to the sensitive female character study of Vibrator, but it’s still a bit of a departure for Hiroki - the film’s emphasis is not on explicit sexuality, and his denouement does not offer easy redemption for the film’s female protagonist. Yuko (Vibrator star Shinobu Terajima) is a single, unemployed woman in her mid-30s with a critical dependence on medication prescribed for her manic depression. She is in various levels of involvement with four men: a cousin with whom she shares a sexual attraction; a taciturn young gangster who shares her depressive condition; a self-described pervert whom she encountered online; and an old college classmate with a political future, but an inability to relate to Yuko romantically. With this quiet, introspective drama, Hiroki subtly implies that one of these four figures in Yuko’s life will provide her with the emotional transformation that she so desperately needs, but the answer isn’t that simple. With a melancholy conclusion that will haunt the viewer long after the closing credits roll, Hiroki leaves us with the message that true change must emanate from within. In the process, he confirms his status as one of Japan’s most fascinating filmmakers.”

CANFIELD REVIEWS SLITHER

A great monster movie is an increasing rarity. Horror movies, or at least what passes for horror film these days, are a dime a dozen. Bland movie re-hash-n’-slash is the Special of the Day in the greasy spoon that is the sloppily run multiplex. Getting out of the joint with ones hopes for the future of cinema alive, much less not seriously sick, should be the goal of those who punish themselves with return visits.

Nong and Teng, the Golden Mount Gangsters. New Thai Historical Comedy.

nongtengposter.jpg

A first stumbled across news of Nong and Teng over at WiseKWai’s Thai Film Blog - which you really should read more often than you do - but thanks to a brutally slow and overly flash dependent website I gave up on finding anything about it at the time. Well, the site - still brutally slow - has added an English menu system, which at least allowed me to isolate the trailer file.

Thai comedy doesn’t generally translate very well but the production values on this are fantastic - it’s set in the early twenties and revolves around the beginnings of Thai cinema - and Ong Bak fans will be happy to see the nearly omnipresent Mum Jokmok turn up once again. You can check the link above for more details.

The course is run by charismatic Californian guru Donna Shuck, whose six-step programme Adventures in Truth teaches that spiritual growth can be achieved through speaking the truth at all times.

That Snake In Anaconda? Nothing But A Squirming Little Worm ... Check the Beasts In Boa ...

Posted by Todd Brown at 9:23am.

Posted in Horror, Asia

Much anticipated - well, around here anyway - That giant snake flick Vengeance is still fresh in theaters there and already the stakes in the big snake sweepstakes have been upped considerably.  A snake that can eat a person whole?  Child’s play!  How about one that can catch and crush a helicopter?  Now that’s a big snake.  Literally all I know about this one is that it’s titled Boa and it features large reptiles that would send my mother screaming from the room, but on the strength of those two posters I’ve just got to see it ... click those earlier links for big versions of both.

The official site isn’t live yet but Deknang has loads of information in Thai here.  Someone translate, please!

Teaser Poster for Park Chan Wook's I'm A Cyborg And That's Okay

Ooooh ... a poster over in the KFC Forums has spotted the teaser poster for the latest from the director of Oldboy.  Following his grim trilogy - and before moving on to what he is calling his darkest film yet, a vampire picture - director Park Chan Wook is cleansing his palette with a romantic comedy about a girl in a mental institution who believes that she is a cyborg.  The film literally just began shooting within the past few days so I’m betting that this poster is an advance teaser prepped to help pre-sell the picture at the upcoming Cannes film market.
