Yep, another one. Touted as the ‘Theatrical Trailer’. Well, it’s different to the most recent posted here, and different from the one I saw at the Cinema recently. Very, very confused now - too many trailers…

Anyhow, here. Quicktime.

Joyeux Noël a.k.a Merry Christmas

I have been eagerly anticipating to hear and see more about a film that I think might very well be one of the surprises in European cinema this year. Joyeux Noël is directed by Christian Carion who has a very special place in my heart. His superb The Girl from Paris proved to me that Carion is a name that will definitely deliver in the future and needless to say Joyeux Noël was selected to debut at this year’s Cannes Film Festival. In addition the plot of the film sounds quite promising as well:

On Christmas Eve during World War I German, French, and Scottish soldiers decide to put their differencies away, forget about the war, and play the “beautiful game"- football.

The film features a massive crew of well known European actors: Daniel Bruhl (Goodbye Lenin), Guillaume Canet (Vidocq), Gary Lewis (Gangs of New York), Bernard Le Coq, Benno Furmann (The Princess and the Warrior), etc.

Saimir

I wanted to bring to your attention a film that probably will spur some interesting memories. Remember Detlev and his powerful performance in Christiane F.? Well, he appears on the poster for Saimir, the winner of the Luigi De Laurentis Award at the Venice Film Festival. Interestingly enough Thomas Haustein’s (Detlev) name is nowehere to be found in this production, which leads me to believe that there is some sort of conspiracy here...because he looks exactly the same...as what he looked like back in 1981.

Puteri Gunung Ledang: A Big Budget Malaysian Epic

Just spotted a note about Puteri Gunung Ledang over on KFC Cinema and was intrigued enough to go seek out a trailer.  I must say that I’m very, very impressed ...

Apparently this is the first Malaysian film sold to international markets EVER and it’s easy to see why people would want to snap this up.  Gorgeous film work, fantastic production values, some solid martial arts action ... never mind being a good first attempt, this just looks like a fantastic film, period.  You can hit the film’s website here or select one of six trailer options here.  I’m partial to this one.

Yep, another trailer for The Island.  It’s got a bunch of new footage - which all looks good - but the pacing on this one seems a fair bit off.  Definitely not as good as the original trailer was.  Click here to check it out.

It was one of the big winners at Sundance and one of the big buzz films at Cannes and now that the trailer’s gone online it’s very, very easy to see why.  Frankly I’m surprised - in a good way - that a little company like IFC was able to scoop this out from under the big boys ...

Check the trailer here and wait to be exposed to one of the strangest compliments ever ...

North American Trailer For Wong Kar Wai's 2046!

It seems like we’ve been talking about this film forever but that’s only because we have.  We’d have gotten bored of it by now except, you know, it’s really good.

Sony has gotten the North American trailer for Wong Kar Wai’s latest opus online and it looks good.  Click here to check it in Quicktime format.  All other formats are hopelessly inferior, thus I shall not link to them.

North American release rolls out August 5th and - curiously - Sony is currently listing the running time as TBD.  Are we getting a different cut?  Has WKW been tinkering again?  Interesting ... I’ll try and find out ...

Kinamand (Chinaman) Review

I stumbled across the trailer for Kinamand a couple days back and was rather taken with it but couldn’t quite get a fix on where it was coming from and then, as if by magic, someone passed in a brief review.  Yes, I live a charmed life.  Turns out the Danish film is about a man who agrees to a marriage of convenience to help a Chinese woman stay in Denmark in return for the funds he needs to pay the legal bills from his divorce ... Really beautifully shot.  Check the trailer here and read on for the review.

Michael Bay speaks up on Transformers

optimus-prime.jpg

While there has been no official word yet on who will helm the big screen adaptation of the classic cartoon series IGN FilmForce did manage to get some dialogue going with one of the top choices, the master of disaster Michael Bay.

Bay says it wasn’t so much the show that appealed to him, but more the prospect of starting a new family film franchise. “I’m not necessarily a fan of the show, but I love the writer’s take on this. I love the whole changing up of the machines. The hook the writers have, I’m really into. I’ve always wanted to do kind of a big family movie, a franchise piece, so that’s why I’m interested in it.”

IGN also caught up with the writing team Alex Kurtzman and Roberto Orci who wrote Bay’s most recent project The Island, “In terms of Transformers, it’s the same approach. How do you do giant robots and care? We used to joke that we were calling it Campbell’s Soup: The Movie because it was the ultimate product placement. You know, just put the toy up there and what are you gonna do? So we’ve been very diligent to find what the character story is. How they relate to the story, how they relate to the humans, so it’s not just a toy commercial. So I think it’s going well.”

So Bay admitting that he was not a fan of the show is a real confidence booster [sarcasm]. But is it alright that he have an objective viewpoint when entering this project? Do you want a fan-boy behind the camera? He’s bought into the vision of the writers, which is good, because it sounds like they’re purposeful on injecting some real humanity into the script. So it may not be all lasers and explosions but also some sit-down time with dad to talk about girls and baseball.

Danny Boyle okays Chinese Shallow Grave remake

Posted by Mack at 5:27pm.

Shallow-Grave.jpg

Director Danny Boyle has given the okay for a remake of his 1994 cult classic Shallow Grave. At the helm of this Chinese remake will be director Agan, to whom I only see 2 film credits over at IMDB [a little help here?].

“If you are going to remake Shallow Grave you would make it in Shanghai,” Boyle said. “What a brilliant place to do it — it’s bursting with capitalist frenzy. We made Shallow Grave at a time in Britain when everyone was sick of the corruption of the Tories. Shallow Grave was really a very cynical look at what that obsession with money did to people. Now there is an explosion in Shanghai and it seems really worthwhile to remake the film. This is a case where the idea for the remake is an even better one than the original.”
