I asked for this because I heard some buzz about it only to be shamed into realizing that I was getting in way late on something I should have noticed a long time ago. Currently in its fourth season Torchwood has got to be ranked as one of the truly great spinoff shows in TV history, too bad its also one of TVs best kept secrets. Hopefully this dynamic five episode miniseries will help change that.

Spun off the Dr Who-verse Torchwood is the name for an elite independent alien fighting force that works alongside but not always with her majestys government. Led by the seemingly immortal Captain Jack Harkness the team neutralizes threats, uncovers conspiracies and fights maintain contact with the people they love.

The Dr Who connection might make potential viewers think that this is going to be a predominantly tongue-in-cheek affair but Torchwood is more like a mix of X Files and Quatermass. For every cheesy moment there are many moments of real suspense, intense action and a lot of character development. No show like this completely escapes getting the monster of the week creak in it's bones. That sort of narrative arthritis is built into the premise. But Torchwood is cleverly written and awfully fun to watch even when its effects don't match up to its ambitions. Occasionally it's even pretty unsettling. Take this miniseries as an example.

On an otherwise normal day every-single child on earth simultaneously freezes and begins to repeat the phrase "We are coming." As governments around the world begin a frantic effort to uncover the meaning of the phrase Torchwood launches its independent investigation into the incident only to find itself under attack from mysterious forces that date back to dark events occurring in 1965. Soon Captain Jack, Gwen and Ianto are forced to call the very existence of Torchwood into question as the fate of world hangs in the balance.

This two disc DVD set includes a featurette; Torchwood Children of Earth Declassified. Seasons one and two of this are already out on DVD and Bluray and season three is expected soon. My advice is if you're nervous try Children of Earth on for size. I'm betting you'll check out season one soon after.

Children of earth is much better than the standard torchwood fare which is normally too puerile to be effective.

The odd episode works well, but it is the odd episode imo.

i love Doctor Who and I get a sense of sheer joy from watching it but when it came to Torchwood...I was left cold. I bought Season 1 on Blu Ray and it was just...weak.
It lacked any bite and was just like a bunch of teenagers trying to prove themselves to mum and dad; saying 'Look! We're adults! We're edgy and can say naughty words'.

I haven't checked out Season 2 yet and I'm told that it's much better but I dunno...
I want to enjoy it...I really do!

BTW Canfield, Children of Earth is Season 3, with Season 4 only recently announced as being greenlit.

I wasn't as impressed with the 5 ep. Children episodes as I am with the previous seasons. The more the Children of Earth went on, the less interested I became and the more I realized that Torchwood was the most ineffective team, given previous experience, that pretty much had their hands tied most of the show, which was lame. There was huge holes in the story and character development that ended up being useless or wasted. It opened with a bang and ended with a contradictory sappy and wimpy ta-ta.
