One of my favorite films of last year is now one of my favorite DVDs of this year. Signaling a major step away from the pyrotechnic camera movement and genre specific efforts his earlier work Fincher told the story of Zodiac in an entirely unexpected way focusing on the impact the unknown killers crimes had on those who pursued him. The murders were all the more chilling for being so matter of fact and the performances were absolutely wonderful. This two-disc dvd set includes a lot of expected stuff like a directors commentary, an extra cast commentary and a few featurettes on the making of the film but also included is an extensive feature length look at the real life investigation featuring astonishing interviews with Zodiac survivors and law enforcement principals as well as interviews with suspects families and friends. This could easily have been packaged on its own and is one of the best documentaries I’ve seen this year.
