I was left confused by the obscurity of this nifty little thriller. It isn’t in Phil Hardy’s Encyclopedia of Horror or any of the otherwise excellent McFarland resource books I have on hand. This is all the more surprising given the participation of Michael Rennie whose appearance should merit mention in any reputable genre resource. I finally found a fabulous review of it in Tim Lucas’ huge and only recently published Mario Bava All the Colors of The Dark biography. He doesn’t think much of Naked You Die or its director, Antonio Margheriti. And though I think he’s right about Margheriti being the poor man’s Bava I think he’s wrong about Naked You Die!
While certainly not the great film Bava could have made it is the fun and decidedly quirky product of its times bringing a sense of whimsy and light entertainment to a genre that quickly became devoid of such characteristics. In fact, after viewing it I’ve come to the conclusion that this is a much neglected minor classic and certainly important in the development of Giallo cinema.
Naked You Die details a series of murders at an all girls school giving the audience various red herrings, comic banter and eye popping colors to play with. Even when the dialogue, and consequently the humor, falls flat Naked You Die comes across as a cheesily enjoyable if naïve stab at style of storytelling that matured into deeper things. The score featuring original music by Carlo Savina and a hilariously sing-alongable title song, Nightmare by Carlo Savina and Don Powell
Don’t let the title fool you. The film is surprisingly tame offering only scant skin and that is a strong part of its charm. There’s really nothing all that shocking in it. The lack of extras here is a shame. I would definitely be interested in knowing more about the project. Evidently the script originated from a story by Mario Bava and Giovanni Simonelli but was directed Antonio Margheriti best known for Cannibal Apocalypse and for his (mostly feel false) claim that he directed large portions of Flesh For Frankenstein.
