Trust me a purchase here is worth the increased shelf space that this new Space 1999 Megaset provides. We’re talking a little less than a fourth as big and for what you can make off your old set on Ebay you should be able to pick up the new one and have a little change left over. This show remains more of a curiosity for most than a must own but there’s no doubt it is a landmark in the history of TV Science Fiction. Made in 1975 and starring Martin Landau the series followers a group of scientists who find themselves permanently adrift when the moon separates from the earths orbit. Extremely expensive for its time the show offered great special effects and a hard line SF approach to its subject that made it unique to audiences who had grownup with the likes of Lost In Space and Star Trek.
There are ample Special Features here as well as all 48 episodes on 17 thinpak discs. As listed they include Original promotional spots, Photo galleries of production stills, Season 1 trailer gallery, Original Year 2 behind-the-scenes featurette, Gallery of original pre-production artwork, BBC "behind the scenes" segment, Original theatrical trailers, Special effects featurette with Brian Johnson, Rare "Blackpool Exhibit Film," Rare vintage interviews with cast and crew,
Vintage interview with Year 2 set designer Keith Wilson, Three complete remastered episodes featuring in-depth behind-the-scenes running audio commentary
Fan-produced series ending "Message from Moonbase Alpha," and Alternate sequences from key episodes.
One does have to wonder why they didn't hire John Muir, who has authored an excellent book on the show for McFarland Press, to provide commentary for the whole series. But this is a solid set well worth your time.
