Blast From the Past: Aankhen (2002)

Three blind men rob a bank in broad daylight.

That outrageous premise serves as the driving force behind an elaborate revenge fantasy put into play by Rajput, a vengeful bank manager (the great and glowering Amitabh Bachchan). He blackmails Neha (Sushmita Sen), an instructor for the blind, into training his hand-picked, motley crew.

A few more comments -- and a question about DVD availability -- after the jump.

The initial scenes demonstrate Rajput's forceful, unbalanced personality before detailing the weeks of training involved for the men. The training sequences are reminiscent of dozens of other films, but the characters of the blind men -- jokester musician Ilias (Paresh Rawal), sixth-sense foreteller Vishwas (Akshay Kumar), and Arjun (Arjun Rampal), who's handy with a bow and arrow -- are brought to the fore, and there's good interplay between them, Neha, and Rajput.

The bank robbery doesn't go as planned -- how could it? -- but the film (based on a stage play) still has plenty of gas left over to cook up a fine stew of deception and double crosses.

And, yes, I stood up and cheered twice before the end credits rolled.

I'll be the first to say I know next to nothing about Bollywood films, but I found this to be very satisfying entertainment. The four musical numbers fit in well with the story.

The rental DVD I watched (Region 1, Video Sound) did not look eye-popping; the print looked worn and the picture appeared a bit dark. It appears that a Region 2 edition was also released, but I haven't found a retailer yet that stocks either edition.

Does anyone have any further information on DVD availability? At a minimum, it's likely to be available at local retail locations that rent Bollywood films, and it's definitely worth checking out.
