THE REEF to broadcast live from set

by Simon de Bruyn, November 3, 2009 10:20 AM

With directors now blogging, snapping pics on their iPhone and twittering from set, it's increasingly easy for film fans to get closer than ever to the filmmaking process.

Now Australian shark thriller The Reef is taking things a step further, and will be streaming live footage from set in Hervey Bay, Queensland - where it is currently filming.

The Reef director Andrew Traucki - who was also behind 2007 low budget croc scare-fest Black Water - explained that technology is now at a point where it is possible to let audiences see the inner-workings of a day on set, balls and all, as it happens.

"We used the internet a lot to push Black Water and our viral videos for that film generated a lot of word of mouth," he told Twitch Film.

"We're going to have two cameras filming footage, one on our big camera and one outside watching things, interspersed with interviews cut beforehand. It might be a world first and it's certainly a first for an Australian film that you can see everything on set as it happens."

The Reef sees Traucki return to what proved a success with Black Water, menacing tourists with a giant Australian predator - this time pitting them against a 15-foot great white shark, as they swim through the cold ocean from their upturned boat towards an island reef.

Set your clocks: The Reef streams live from set on November 4th in the US/UK (November 5th in Australia).
