In the world of international animation it is hard to think of anyone whose reputation has grown larger with a single project than Sylvain Chomet's.  Chomet burst on to the international scene in 2003 with The Triplets of Belleville - or Belleville Rendez Vous, if you prefer - his debut feature, a film which one him instant and much deserved fame around the globe.  Not only was Chomet a very deliberate throwback in technique and style but he was just flat out brilliant and completely and utterly unique.  And ever since Triplets fans of animation all around the globe have been waiting for Chomet's next feature, The Illusionist

No, there is no trailer for this one yet.  And no, there isn't even a release date that I'm aware of.  But the film - from a story by legendary performer Jacques Tati - is back in the headlines here thanks to artistic director Evgeni Tomov who recently posted a series of images from the picture on his website.  Absolutely beautiful.

This is some of the best news I have heard in a while. The director of Belleville doing a story of Tati?! Sounds perfect!

Quick correction - Chomet's work is gorgeous, and his own style, but it's not all hand-drawn. Belleville Rendez-vous (the title I prefer) actually had quite a lot of CG work in it - any large physical objects or vehicles were all modelled in 3-D, they were just done in a way so that they still looked hand-drawn.

Well, I have been misinformed, then. Thanks for the correction! That's an impressive integration of styles, then.
