Yoo Ha Joins Hollywood's Remake Shopping Cart

by X, October 22, 2009 5:07 AM

...and before you take out forks and spears, CJ Entertainment is co-producing, so don't blame Hollywood alone.

Variety is reporting that Sparkler Entertainment of National Treasure will produce a remake of Yoo Ha's terrific 2006 gangster pic 비열한 거리 (A Dirty Carnival), collaborating with the Korean production and distribution juggernaut, while writing duties will go to Chris Hauty of Never Back Down. Not an entirely surprising choice, but you wonder what's the point of trying to translate the unique reality of this 조폭 (jopok, short for organized crime societies) glamour-deconstructing tour de force, when both Hollywood and American TV have had plenty of material to work with in the past. Still, you know the deal. Wholesale remake practices are likely to continue.

Set aside the remake news, what's interesting is whether director Yoo will go back and finish the "trilogy of violence" which started with 말죽거리 잔혹사 (Once Upon a Time in High School), and along with A Dirty Carnival and his eclectic debut 결혼은 미친 짓이다 (Marriage is Crazy) catapulted him into the upper echelon of Korean directors, before he crash landed with the terribly misguided 쌍화점 (Frozen Flower). In this Cine21 interview after the film he said he wants to try something a little tamer and contemporary, before moving again onto an even bigger sageuk project (why?), but we'll see.

I thought "Dirty Carneval" was a remake of Scorseses "Mean Streets"...?
Why then not remaking "Mean Streets", at least its much older.

Nah, they just have the same title in Korean. Completely unrelated.

Oh, really? I can remember, it was stated as a remake of "Mean Streets", when it came out.
But actually, I could find little similiarities. "What a classy remake.." I thought back then. But now I see...lol
