It's Official, Chow Yun-Fat Joins Jiang Wen's Western 让子弹飞 (Let The Bullets Fly)

by X, October 21, 2009 3:59 AM

We last reported about Jiang Wen's upcoming 让子弹飞 (Let The Bullets Fly) in July, when news regarding the film was first announced. The idea was that Mainland superstar Ge You would join Jiang in this black comedy-cum-western set in China's tumultuous 1920s, aiming to cast a big International star, role which the tabloids suggested would go to good old Chow Yun-Fat. Well, for once, the tabloids were right, as Chow has finally put pen to paper.

Even though the film started shooting in secret last September 28 around Beijing, Chow's casting was only announced today - perhaps not to get buried by the onslaught of anniversary-related news? Let The Bullets Fly is adapted from Ma Shitu's 1983 anthology 夜谭十记 (Ye Tan Shi Ji), and focuses on a group of bandits during the Beiyang Army days and the feudal wars of the 1920s.

Other than the leading trio (Jiang is starring as well), the film also stars Hu Jun, Chen Kun and Zhou Yun. Release is set for Fall 2010.

Here's the Press Release:

CHOW YUN FAT JOINS THE CAST OF
JIANG WEN ACTION COMEDY ‘LET THE BULLETS FLY’

(Beijing, October 21) – Hollywood star Chow Yun Fat has joined mainland Chinese director Jiang Wen and thespian Ge You on the set of Jiang’s action comedy “Let the Bullets Fly”, it was announced today.

This sets up a giant clash of the Chinese titans who will be appearing on-screen together for the first time and ended months of speculation about whether Chow would join the movie. In the movie, Chow plays a callous and cruel, but visionary, triad leader in the early days of the Republic.

“To us there is no one else more suitable for the role than Chow Yun Fat,” says “Let the Bullets Fly” producer Ma Ke. “He expressed his interest very early on and had reserved the second half of 2009 for the filming. It was a matter of working out the script to everyone’s satisfaction. We’re very happy that he’s finally on board.”

The script had undergone nine rewrites with 10 different endings before it was finalized on Monday.

The US$18 million film is co-produced by Emperor Motion Pictures, Beijing Buyilehu Film Ltd and other partners.

“Let the Bullets Fly” is currently in production and is slated for a fall 2010 release.
