Is THE CUP OF TEARS An Irish Response To Kaz Kiriya?

You may never have thought of Ireland as being a hotbed for glossy martial arts fantasy but if director Gary Shore has his way that will soon be changing.  An accomplished effects man and commercials director, Shore is currently working away on The Cup Of Tears, what appears to be not only his debut feature but also the debut of Irish production outfit One Punch Films.  Very little - i.e. bloody well nothing - is said about the story of the film on either Shore's or the One Punch website with all involved seemingly preferring to let the visuals do the talking for them. And when your visuals are this strong, why not?

With the heavy degree of CG enhancement Shore is using here it is impossible not to think of Japan's Kaz Kiriya when watching the trailer for The Cup of Tears and I imagine that this will divide audiences along the very same lines as Kiriya's work does: Into one camp that considers it pure, tasty eye candy and into another that finds it all a little too similar to a video game cut scene.  Decide for yourself below.

Do want. I also love Kiriya's films. Always looking for directors who can push the visuals into new territory.

He made the movie with his i mac and casted his brother as a samurai.
Well, as much as I love those images, I don't want to see a white guy, again, as a samurai/shaolin/whatsoever. That's just annoying.

yeah wow. sin city style noir wuxia? looks like a stylish live action film shot in an animated way. if maybe a bit music video like in some parts. very cool, hope it's got the substance to hold it together.

What really won me over was the Space Battle! Sweet stuff. It had a very Samurai Jack feeling to it, which is good, because I like Samurai Jack. Too bad Tartakovsky isn't doing Dark Crystal 2, or that Dark Crystal 2 isn't going to be made.
