Regular Twitch readers are more than familiar with Filipino director Yam Laranas by this point. Already a well-established cinematographer and director in his home country, Laranas rose to international attention in 2004 with Sigaw - an impeccably crafted little exercise in atmosphere that I truly believe would have been one of the leaders of the Asian-horror boom had it released just a couple years earlier. Laranas has since shot an English-language remake of that film and now returns home for Patient X, a new exercise in horror due for release in the Philippines late in October.
A film that promises to be a full-blooded creature feature, Patient X reunites Laranas with his Sigaw star Richard Gutierrez for a story built around the legend of the aswang. A creature unique to Filipino folklore, an aswang is a sort of humanoid predator, similar to a vampire in that they look outwardly normal and are immortal unless killed under very strict conditions but quite different in that while the vampire is more of a parasite the aswang is a full-on killer, hunting in packs and taking down human prey to eat their entrails. Check the trailer below!

HOLY CRAP! That actually looks damn good!
Some of the visuals are arresting... especially the character being burned and the upside down creature reaching out. Hopefully this will find its way to North America sooner than later.
Enjoyed Laranas retelling of Sigaw in NYC. Felt he's shown technical improvements with the Echo and not simply due to having a bigger budget. Was nice to see Iza Calzado make a return in the remake, too.
