Salman Khan Is WANTED

by Todd Brown, August 10, 2009 8:06 PM

In a refreshing change of pace given India's propensity to nick titles and storylines from Hollywood films, Boney Kapoor's Wanted has nothing whatsoever to do with Timur Bekmembatov's recent film of the same name. Instead it is a glossy, big budget, wildly over the top gangster themed action film with Salman Khan in the lead. Khan plays Radhe, a hard edged gangster wanted by both the police - who want to know what he knows - and rival gangs - who know what he knows and want to kill him for it - as Mumbai explodes with violence. And, with this being a Bollywood film, there is also a love interest and song and dance numebrs fo go along with the explosions, forays into bullet time, flying axes and rampant gunplay.

India is actually on a nice streak of solid action films right now thanks both to some imported action directors, a rising crop of their own behind the scenes talent and a growing stable of believable front-of-camera action stars, Khan very much among them. Big stupid fun in trailer form lies below the break.

I get the impression that John Woo's Mission Impossible 2 was a big influence on Indian action movies...

Prabhu Deva's last big movie was Pokkiri. He generally works in South Indian films, although he does a lot of choreography for Hindi films as well. One decent action film I liked was Don (2006). One must recalibrate what equates as a "good" film when watching Indian film. Another recent success in my eyes was Luck By Chance, which is an insider's look at the Hindi film business with lots of cameos and in-jokes, but still very entertaining.
