Video Player All Time Top Ten! No. 9: MICMACS A TIRE-LARIGOT

by Todd Brown, August 31, 2009 5:43 PM

[Twitch is undergoing some behind the scenes tire kicking and bolt-tightening over the next few days, work that may slow down the regular flow of new information a little bit. So, while that's going on we'll be presenting a series of retro-reposts, pulling forward the all time top ten videos since we moved to our current video system. This post originally appeared June 29.]

Is it better to live with a bullet lodged in your brain, even if it means you might drop dead any time? Or would you rather have the bullet taken out and live the rest of your life as a vegetable? Are zebras white with black stripes or black with white stripes? Is scrap metal worth more than landmines? Can you get drunk from eating waffles? Can a woman fit inside a refrigerator? What's the human cannonball world record? Find out answers to these questions and more. A comedy in the vein of Delicatessen and Amélie.

Yes, kids, after a foray into the world of epic spectacle with his war-themed A Very Long Engagement, director Jean-Pierre Jeunet is not only back with a new film but very much back on form. Those references to Delicatessen and Amelie in the official synopsis? Very much earned as the just released teaser for Jeunet's Micmacs A Tire-Larigot looks to very much hit the sweet spot between the two. Good lord, I want to see more ... check the teaser below the break!

I'm looking forward to this, and I enjoyed A Very Long Engagement as well. It definitely had the Jeunet touch, even though it was more serious subject manner. There isn't much in the trailer that hints at whimsy on the level of Amelie, but at least it isn't Alien Resurrection.

Ooops, misquoted you there, should've said "at least it isn't Alien Resurrection". Sorry, my brain appears to have stopped working today.

he's baaaack!!

with the filtering being used this absolutely appears to have the delicatessen visual aesthetic.

teaser seems to play up more lighter fare a la amelie.

ought to be a winner.

still want to see Caro back w/ Jeunet in the near future for a more grotty, steampunk epic.

a nice teaser for me :)

This is reason to rejoice!

CANNOT WAIT.

Tres nice! Jeunet is a world class cultural treasure. Even his Alien film was an amazing piece of art, if the end became a bit muddled. His films have gotten a bit too normal lately, but his stories have gotten richer too. This one looks more like the oddball offbeat stuff he did with Caro, looks very cool. They should get back together. Caro's Dante 01 was certainly interesting but it seems like he could gain from collaborating with Jeunet's better grip at a storyline. And Jeunet would be more interesting with Caro's madly serius gravitas.

Super stoked for this one.

Can I just say I like Alien Res? I mean you have to have pretty big balls to make a franchise installment filled with humor in arguably one of the least "fun" and more serious horror/action/sci-fi of series of all time. But then again both AVP 1 and 2 were pure comedy so I guess maybe I'm just willing to give Jean-Pierre a pass on anything.

I was just last week wondering what Jeunet was up to. What great timing. I love everything he has done. I even like Aliens Resurrection. Both Amelie and City of Lost Children are always in my top 5 movies ever. Delicatessen and A Very Long Engagement in the top 10. The man is a genius.

Would have been interesting to see what his vision of "The Life of Pi" would be like.

Rhythem-X, I agree about WB, I still can't forgive them for the ham-handed distribution and publicity for THE IRON GIANT.

THE IRON GIANT got released to theaters - ham-handed distribution is better than none. A better example would be how they dismantled all their specialty divisions, or better yet how they buried about 5 mid-to-late-90s years of the Golden Harvest catalog in an unmarked grave in 1999.
