James Cameron's AVATAR Trailer

by Kurt Halfyard, August 20, 2009 4:54 PM

It's one of the biggest films ever made and expected to push 3D technology up to whole new levels. It's been in the works seemingly forever. Its creation required the development of entirely new types of technology. It is James Cameron's Avatar, the trailer was due to premiere on Apple today and ... their site is FUBAR. Yes, all that money and all that time and the big unveiling is squelched by a bad bit of HTML coding. Not to worry, though, there are other options and you can find a good, high quality version here.

Honestly, I hope the 3D makes a big difference because while parts of this look amazing others look like a standard - albeit high quality - video game cut-scene and for all the talk and hype and buzz - not to mention the massive amount of money spent, I expect more than this.

It is embedded after the Jump.

Been a long time since I've seen something this ugly made with so much money. Hilarious.

user-pic

Left me totally cold...

user-pic

So True! Its a shame! Whats in the head of Cameron?

user-pic

One think I've always liked about James Cameron's films is how tactile and substationally real they look. Yes, even The Abyss and Terminator 2 with the early CGI goodies.

This looks like the first Final Fantasy movie from a few years ago. Seriously, if someone told me it was 100% animated, I'd believe it.

user-pic

Producers created such a huge buzz, but in result is looks like an average modern game's trailer.

user-pic

well, could be ok, unable to judge from the trailer.....but the trailer alone isn't that good.....I've seen much better in terms of creating anticipation...

user-pic

First of all. I don't know what super computer games you guys have been playing but to claim that this looks like a game cutscene is just wrong. This is far, far, far superior in every way.

I've been getting less and less excited about this film as more I see from it. My biggest gripe is those awful alien designs and for some reason I keep thinking of Ferngully when ever I see them.
I predict that the film will be this year's Speed Racer, in terms of box office. Maybe the film is very good, and we'll see how that preview will go down tomorrow but I find it very difficult to see how this is appealing to the public, just as Speed Racer was.
I'm pretty sure that those people who love anthropomorphic comics are losing their minds over this.

What surprises me is that everyone is surprised and/or disappointed!

James Cameron directed Titanic, possibly the worst ever film to be a financial success! While Terminator 2 was OK and Aliens was enjoyable (though not even close to the classy Alien) he is in no way a director who guarantees quality. It looks to me like the usual 'much noise, signifying nothing.'

Still, we shouldn't judge a movie by its trailer alone, so fingers crossed but why should we expect a genuine quality movie from this guy. I'm sure it'll do OK, mainly on the strength of improved 3D, but that may be a blind alley in its own right. Last time 3D was touted as the new big thing it was because people had stopped going to the movies. Plus ca change, plus ca meme!

user-pic

After all that, and it's just Ferngully 2? With character designs from the box of a PC graphics card circa 1994? Ugh...

user-pic

You all DO realize that you are watching a 3D movie trailer in 2D. Of course its NOT going to LOOK GOOD. /sigh at the hate and it isnt EVEN OUT YET.

Once again this is why the Internet is ruining film.

user-pic

If it's good only because of its gimmick then it's likely to not be good at all. Coraline (trailers and movie itself) is just as amazing in 2D as it is in 3D. It comes down to being interesting and engaging. If a trailer can't do that for all of it's flash and boom, then it's going to be a hard sell no matter if it's 3D, has electrified chairs or insurance policies.

user-pic

I just hope that once he finally gets this out of his system he can move on to doing something more interesting looking.

user-pic

Hmmmm...not sure what to think about this one. I think it looks cool and will probably be a great film but I agree with everyone else. It looks really awesome in parts but in other looks kinda cheap. Honestly the creatures and mech in District 9 looked remarkably more lifelike and that was a $30 million dollar film. In fact every aspect of the trailer reminds me of a film that looked better or at least just as good. The environements remind me of King Kong, The mechs remind me of Matrix Revolutions and that creature reminds me of The Host. I'm going to be optimistic and say Cameron is saving the best for last considering how closely he's been guarding this film over the past few years. Plus I haven't seen the whole film or what 3D technology is going to do for it so I'm still really looking forward to seeing the final result.

user-pic

Underwhelming cgi aside...i hate the design and look of almost all of it, and so much of it going on to concentrate.
It's the phantom menace all over again..."a firework display of a toy advert"

user-pic

Yeah, I did say I'm sure the 3D will impress me.

Still, I could be sitting there yelling 'oh dear God it's just like being there' but that wouldn't automatically make it a good film. I accept hype tends to make me pretty cynical, but if no-one had ever said a word about the 3D or the supposed earth-shattering quality of the CG I'm fairly sure I wouldn't be that excited over this. I'm sure it'll make for a decent watch - Cameron has undeniable talent and in large part deserves his success - but at the same time he's never really bowled me over with anything he's done. Sure, it's just a trailer, I could be missing subtleties and nuances in the story or characterisation or whatever, but Christ, it's James Cameron. I'll happily get drunk and quote Aliens with my friends but I haven't actually watched it in years and right now have no desire to.

I'm sure in a decade or two we'll all be thankful he sank the money into this technology, but hey, I'll take something with real artistry, intelligence and depth over a mega-budget, and from this trailer I'm not seeing any of those things.

user-pic

It resembles an animated science fiction book cover. Like DAW-SF covers. Elf-warriors and winged mounts. Sheesh. I'm not excited by this but it should be pointed out that almost all James Cameron movies have great pacing that is matched by production. So I wouldn't expect the look of it to be the be-all and end-all of the film. I'll reserve my judgment about how 'realistic' it looks for the first 3D screen I see this on.

user-pic

Chevalier,

your first paragraph almost made me want to agree with you.

NOT. :)

you can say the same about almost every old-school Hollywood romance/adventure, because Titanic is really fashioned after such films. but it's really not about rich people being evil. it's more about what money and perceived class difference do to people.

user-pic

it really does look like a videogame cut scene. it's probably fun in 3D, but what isn't.

user-pic

"you can say the same about almost every old-school Hollywood romance/adventure, because Titanic is really fashioned after such films."

And thus, the reason i don't like said type of films, "romantic" movies area usually a waste of time, 98% easily. The weird rare exception to the rule comes out like every 20 or 30 years. Annie Hall, Oasis.....can't think of other. What some of the old school hollywood flick did had was charismatic actors, Titanic has Leo Dicaprio, who has the charisma of a piece of wood. I also want to think that at least some of those old hollywood movies (haven't seen many romantic flicks) at least had better written characters and situations. Everything in Titanic screams soap opera 101, it's like watching an episode of Grey's Anatomy...on a ship.

"but it’s really not about rich people being evil. it’s more about what money and perceived class difference do to people."

No, it is about rich people being evil, and poor people being always good of heart and honest.

user-pic

It will look better in 3D??

user-pic

Looking back at "Aliens", it isn't the visual spectacle of it that lingers as much as the construction of the action scenes and warmly drawn (if often pastel-color simple) characters. A two minute montage of "Alien" would have me salivating even today, but "Aliens" would look dated, crude in places and cliched.

Maybe the mistake of this trailer is to emphasise the the technology and spectacle of it all, though Cameron himself has been droning on about that aspect himself. It *does* look plastic and weightless in places, but seeing glimpses and fragments of a whole doesn't tell me much about what makes Cameron's movies special to me.

Oh, and I'll defend Titanic as one of the best portrayals of mass, mortal panic and class division I've seen in a mainstream movie. Cardboard characters be damned, it had a lot of substance beneath the bubblegum.

user-pic

(...and with "WOW" I do NOT mean "World Of Warcraft", no matter how Elfin the designs are, winged mounts and all... instead it means I'll probably be stunned several times)

user-pic

All the complainers will be standing in line to see this...ok maybe it's not as perfect as we were lead to believe, it's still spectacular. It makes a big difference to see it in HD, it looks more realistic. Better than Gollum, and this here is a whole world created. So some of you think fantasy is passe?! Similar combinations of fantasy and sci-fi have never been as carefully created as this, this one is immersive, adult, richly detailed. I think cinephiles should be very appreciative of Cameron's immense achievement here, and specially anyone who has a taste for genre's involving unseen worlds, creatures and technology. Thank God someone is actually creating something original and having the guts to spend big on it.
And those buglike gunships are like something out of Apocalypse Now in futuristic mode. Nice. I think Speedracer, which was strangely underappreciated, will be financially left eating the dust of this one. And so will D 9, amazingly good as it seems like it is.

user-pic

All the complainers will be standing in line to see this...

This retarded line needs to be thrown on the festering compost pile right next to "turn your brain off and enjoy it". I'm still waiting for the reeducation squads to show up and force me to watch TRANSFORMERS 2, the last major "all the complainers will be standing in line so STFU" movie, with guns pressed to my temple. At this point I seriously doubt they're coming, not that it matters as I'd opt for a bullet in the temple over that movie anyway.

Thank God someone is actually creating something original and having the guts to spend big on it

The second part of that sentence is the reason why the first part of that sentence almost never actually happens.

user-pic

Just saw the 15 minutes in 3D.

STFU

This just plain awesome. Funny, the HD 1080 trailer actually looks like shit compared with the big screen experience. The life simply disappears in the H264 compresion.

user-pic

I just got back from a 20min preview screening in 3D. It was awesome and my first 3D film experience. I will definitely see this in December, although I'm not sure if my eyes can take watching a full length movie in 3D. One negative thing, the screening had Swedish subtitles and they stood out like crazy and were distracting as hell. Hopefully they will show the complete film without subtitles when released.

user-pic

Kind of on the fence with this one. I've seen many a 3D movie, and quite frankly I can't do it the whole way without giving my eyes a rest. IMHO, if it's a shit movie, it will just be a shit movie in 3D. The converse is also the same. If a movie "needs" 3D to be good, well then it isn't good to begin with.

user-pic

rhytmx, why so much mindless hatred? comparing Avatar to Transformers is not very bright.
