Nimrod Antal's PREDATORS

by Kurt Halfyard, July 2, 2009 3:24 PM

We are mighty big fans of Nimrod Antal's 2003 Hungarian subway drama, Kontroll, which at the time, due to its sense of style, humour and intensity, besides being a breath of fresh air in the stuffier Hungarian Cinema circles, also seemed like a Hollywood calling card of sorts. That proved true and resulted in the enjoyable thriller Vacancy and the decidedly more generic-looking Armoured which is on its way to the multiplex presently. But here is the blockbuster big-time moment for Antal, as he is being handed the keys to the Predator franchise. Hmmm, I find this to be pretty exciting. Antal had to beat out some tough competition, namely Neil Marshall, for the gig.

The 1987 original is practically canonized as one of the great 1980s beef-cake action pictures with great action and macho humour and sensibility. And the awesomeness of Predator 2 is often overlooked? I mean that quite seriously, Predator 2 rocks. Can Nimrod Antal and producer Robert Rodriguez stuff lightning in a bottle for a third go-around?

Either way, Robert Rodriguez's Troublemaker Studios is aiming for a fall start on Predators with elements of his 1994 screenplay draft and the KNB group practical special effects philosophy. Excited? Ready to wash the bile of the AVP films out of your craw?

Robert rodriguez? Ugh...

I liked Kontroll but Nimrod, just like any other good foreign director in hollywood, is getting crap material to direct.

I absolutely loved Kontroll, and found quite a lot to like in Vacancy. While I'm not sure if Antel is as good a choice for the franchise as Marshall (he's more than proven himself as a creature flick director), I'm curious to see what he does with the film. And I'm happy to see Rodriguez producing rather than directing.

Kontroll was a great movie I caught at the VIFF. I'm glad to agree with Kurt on that but Predator 2 was an 'awesome' movie? Um I'm a fan of 80s all-star B-casts and all but it does not hold a feather to the original. Danny Glover vs Arnold. Hm. Ruben Blades vs Bill Duke. Okayyyy

Totally agree about Predator 2. I'm not saying it's better than the first but it's terribly underrated. As a kid it was my favorite of the two.

I thought Vacancy was ok until the stupid ending and I've never seen Kontroll but have been thinking about picking that up for quite some time now. Whenever I peruse the foreign section in the video store I always wondered if i should pick it up.

I don't think you have to be a "creature director" to make these sort of films. McTiernan sure wasn't when he made the first one. I think that a director who hasn't dwelled in to the genre is a good choice as they might not fall in to established clichés.

Bring McTiernan back!!!!!!

But I think Antal would be a better choice than Marshall...
