Armando Iannucci's IN THE LOOP Tops The Box Office!

by Todd Brown, July 27, 2009 10:57 AM

Well done, America! You've got good taste!

Okay, no, Armando Iannucci's political satire In The Loop may not have topped the box office in terms of overall take - that distinction went to films screening on at least 2700 more screens than it is - but in terms of per-screen-average In The Loop is positively dominant, pulling in more than $25k per screen, which is well more than double the performance of anything in the top ten and more than four times better than most at the top of the list. The Hurt Locker, incidentally, is pulling in a more than respectable $6k per screen in its fifth week of release, not that that's helping it spread at all and I think it's safe to say at this point that Bruno - with a total take that I doubt covers the marketing budget - is an utter flop.

In the Loop is such a good movie.

I was laughing so hard at some of the dialogue coming from Tucker I had cramps.

Not expanding?
Hurt Locker went from 94 screens to 238 in one week!
I'd call that expanding.

Better yet, it is still earning money in excess of 6k per screen, and if it keeps on doing that we'll get to see it expand towards 500+ screens (and higher?).
Hurt Locker has now grossed 4 million USD, half of that during the last 7 days...

I remember back in 2000, when Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon stormed the charts and it was the only movie in the top 10 with less than a 1000 screens attached to it, surrounded by movies that were showing in at least twice as many venues...
People kept mispredicting its success, and when it finally hit the 100.000.000 USD in the States, CTHD was allowed to break through the 1000 screen limit.

nice, nice. sorry for offtopic :)
but I'm glad to hear this. the more money it makes in the US/UK the more likely it will be shown here ! I wanna see it on the big screen again with some friends ! stealing myself into press screenings at 11 in the morning just doesn't cut it.

Getting to 200+ screens in five weeks isn't really a mark of confidence, but I hear what you're saying, Ard. Distribution in the US is such a weird thing now ... anything less than 800 screens is considered a specialty release and even crappy studio films get over 2000 now while good films that would've found a pretty loyal audience in the days when platform releasing was common are lucky to get ten ... this style of releasing has absolutely destroyed the medium budget film ...

I believe that 3 of the 8 screens it's on right now are in Manhattan's IFC Center. I've said this elsewhere but I'm disapointed and confused that IFC is giving this film preferential treatment to any number of its other equally if not more worthy films in their catalogue that they unceremoniously dump on DVD, release briefly with little fanfare on one screen for one week or just disappear--their "exclusive" deal with Blockbuster has kept MY WINNIPEG, MAD DETECTIVE and JAR CITY wrapped up for about a year.

In other words: I'm glad IN THE LOOP is doing well as I think it's rather funny but I'm still disappointed by IFC's marketing and distribution strategies.

Caught IN THE LOOP this weekend (**TWICE!**). Man, that film is rat-a-tat-tat in its priceless quotes! So many, it is hard to keep 'em all straight. I love this film.

IFC won't get a dime from me for anything.
