Alan Mak and Felix Chong Are OVERHEARD

by Todd Brown, June 15, 2009 1:36 AM

While attending the Hong Kong Filmart earlier this year I commented that it appeared star Louis Koo was poised to have a very good year, appearing in two very intriguing new films being heavily promoted at the time. One was the Soi Cheang directed, Johnnie To produced Accident - rumored to be complete around September - while the other was OVerheard, the new cop thriller from writer-director duo Alan Mak and Felix Chong, who have had their hands in a good number of Hong Kong's best cop thrillers of recent years. Here's the synopsis for this one:

A major stock exchange in the world, Hong Kong attracts not only money but any who try to manipulate the market. At the Hong Kong Police Force Commercial Crime Bureau, an operation is underway to infiltrate a trading company, Feng Hua International where a man, nicknamed “Boss” is the chief suspect.

The team, led by Inspector Leung (Lau Ching Wan) together with Yeung (Louis Koo) and Lam (Daniel Wu) install interception devices to monitor the company’s communications. When a crucial information on a surging share were intercepted, a moment of greed led the team in a cross fire between the Bureau and the boss.

Koo, Lau and Wu together in a slick action thriller? Sounds a winner to me. And the trailer looks solid, too. Check it below the break.

Heh, I noticed this while I was doing a quick bit of research for the Red River review... wondered why you hadn't mentioned it yet with the Infernal Affairs/Confession of Pain guys behind it. That is a nice trailer, though it looks like poor Zhang Jingchu doesn't get much of a look-in. :( Oh, well.

It's hard not to be interested in whatever these guys do, i just hope it's better than Confession of Pain.

Michael Wong is in it!

Yeah I thought I spotted Michael Wong in there. Cool. I love Lau Ching Wan, he was great in the Running Out of Time movies.

I would rather argue it's Lau Ching-Wan having a good year here...with Written By coming up and him now starring in a non-Milkyway mainstream film for the first time, since, what, Itchy Heart?

"with the Infernal Affairs/Confession of Pain guys behind it."

Wow, between his former editor and his former editor's brother stealing his STORM RIDERS franchise and his INFERNAL AFFAIRS core team moving ahead on this without him, I gotta wonder - did Andrew Lau do something to piss everyone off? Not like he's been super busy since CONFESSION OF PAIN. Not that I care who Alan Mak's co-directing with this time - he's been pretty reliable going back to his solo effort A WAR NAMED DESIRE.

Michael Wong. The goddamn Energizer Bunny of Hong Kong cinema. Just when you think you've heard the last of him, thump thump thump thump thump...

this is due out sometime next month right? I read somewhere the release date was going to be late July.

Remind me of Yau Nai Hoi's Eye in the Sky. Plus it's got Sean Lau. I'm there!

"Don't you remember your a cop"? On a roof? In Hong Kong? Well I never.
