Subtitled Trailer For Cannes Award Winner DOGTOOTH

by Todd Brown, May 26, 2009 6:07 PM

We commented back when psych-thriller Tale 52 - still very sadly lacking a US distributor - was making the rounds that Greece may very well be a country to watch on the international film scene in coming years. And making me look smart this year was director Yorgos Lanthimos who brought his surreal new drama Dogtooth to Cannes as part of the Un Certain Regard program this year and went away as the big winner.

The father, the mother and their three kids live in a house at the outskirts of a city. There is a tall fence surrounding the house. The kids have never left the house. They are being educated, entertained, bored and exercised in the manner that their parents deem appropriate, without any influence from the outside world. They believe that the airplanes flying over are toys and that zombies are small yellow flowers. The only person allowed to enter the house is Christina. She works as a security guard at the father’s business. The father arranges her visits to the house in order to appease the sexual urges of the son. The whole family is fond of her, especially the eldest daughter. One day Christina gives her as a present a headband that has stones that glow in the dark and asks for something in return.

We've got a subtitled trailer for this one below the break, but be aware that this one is not work safe. There be breasts in there.

Well, to sum it up, as the link on my alias implies, I'm from Movies for the Masses and we did track reactions, at Cannes and online, pretty closely. And if you believe me, Erick Kohn isn't exaggerating when he reports: "The true Cannes discovery of the year, it stunned everyone I know who saw it."

I'm looking forward (if that is the correct expression for movies of this type) to this one in a big way!

i guess the last "screwy family antics" that really shocked was Visiter Q. but there's something even more disturbing about silence-padded parables. so that promo still is for Dogtooth? kept mistaking it for ozon's Swimming Pool.

I like the one film I've seen by Lanthimos--KINETTA--and this film looks like more of that film's mind games. Sounds good.

Sounds interesting.

Style reminds me of Park Chan-Wook (especially -> Sympathy for Mr. Vegeance)
