Brigitte Lin comes out of retirement for Wong Kar-Wai's THE GREAT MASTER

by Al Young, May 19, 2009 7:43 PM

Rejoice Brigitte Lin fans! The Taiwanese actress who's been retired since 1994 is set to make a comeback in Wong Kar-Wai's The Great Master. As with the last year's biopic Ip Man, this film is also about the martial arts practitioner of Wing Chun and the mentor of Bruce Lee. The good news of the goddess's return was cited from Yip Man's son, Yip Chun but on what capacity of her role is not determine yet. Most people familiar with her previous films may remember her best in the wuxia film The Bride with White Hair as the vicious man-hating witch. Both Lin and Wai has collaborated before in Ashes of Time and Chungking Express.

I wouldn't get too excited yet. It's pretty clear that Brigitte Lin is looking to get back into filmmaking with a series of carefully thought out steps that started last year. And appearing again with Wong Kar-wai would be a great next move for her. But Yip Man's son tends to be a bit of a wild card so I wouldn't assume this is final until someone from Jet Tone weighs in.

Now that you mention it, you could be right, Grady. No other source has confirmed it except Crienglish and I'm not sure how reliable that site is with their entertainment news. The article mistakenly mention Yip Man as the creator of Wing Chun which is not true. According to legends, it was a woman Shaolin monk who originated this style. Perhaps an official announcement will happen soon. Or maybe not. Knowing Wong Kar-wai, he likes to take his sweet time. Until then, I'm going to put a question mark on this.

I could endure another 2hr boredom-fest from Wong kar Wai just to see Mrs Lin again. The world needs more fine actresses like her.
