Behold THE LAST DAYS OF EMMA BLANK

by Todd Brown, April 29, 2009 1:47 AM

In the lead up to this year's Cannes Film Festival a common thread through much speculation was how many high profile directors had new films coming and how some of them would, inevitably, be left out. There's a lot of stuff out there that would normally be expected to premiere in Cannes this year that isn't simply because there's not space for it. Enter Alex Van Warmerdam.

The Dutch director would normally be considered a likely candidate for Cannes play. He's a long standing favorite on the festival circuit thanks to titles like Waiter, Grimm and Little Tony and his latest film - the dark comedy The Last Days Of Emma Blank - is not only gearing up for release at precisely the right time but is also represented by top tier sales agent Fortissimo Films who typically place a handful of titles in each of the big festivals every year. You'd think it would be there. But nope. It's not. And if the trailer's any indication it aint for lack of quality ...

A black comedy about a woman who believes she is dying driving her family and servants mad with her ridiculous demands while waiting for death to arrive, this looks like clever, funny stuff rich with character and not above resorting to a pratfall or two to get a laugh. Here's hoping it makes its way over here soon ...
