New Trailer For Kaz Kiriya's GOEMON Is The Best Yet.

by Todd Brown, March 18, 2009 11:50 PM

Yes, boys and girls, strap yourselves in for another two minutes of pure eye candy in the form of the latest theatrical trailer for Kaz Kiriya's period-set martial arts fantasy Goemon. While Kiriya's previous film - anime adaptation Casshern - proved hugely divisive the advance word on Goemon has been much more consistent, and consistently strong. We already knew he was an enormous talent on the visual end of things, the question was whether he could marry his visuals to a style of storytelling that could reach the masses. Well, advance screenings say yes and this trailer seems to bear that out as it is the first to give any sense of the narrative and characters of the piece, a sort of fantasy spin on a Robin Hood type character.

For those who have been keeping track we have so far had an announcement teaser, which I do not reproduce here because it is simply a list of names, followed by a proper theatrical teaser, followed by the first proper trailer, followed by this - the second true theatrical trailer. You'll find both trailers and the teaser below the break.

Well, the visuals have definitely piqued my interest. Looks like a lot of fun.

I saw Goemon in Tokyo at a press screening about a week ago. I don't speak Japanese and it wasn't subtitled, but I still quite enjoyed the film. Visually spectacular (although some of the CG was a little rough) and with some really fantastic action sequences. More straightforward story than Casshern. Definitely worth a look IMHO.

Looks much worse than the first trailer. The first one actually made it look good. :(

I too enjoyed the first trailer more in terms of energy/presentation but I am ready to see it. Hope it gets to the west ASAP.

Mikijiro Hira looks so good. but he's probably gonna get next to no screen time, unlike that stiff overacting Big Thesp Eiji Okuda :(

I liked Casshern -- at least the complete film, not the edited/shortened version on US DVD -- but I'm underwhelmed by this. It looks interesting for sure but then again so did the trailers for Restless and The Promise.

The use of CGI backgrounds in this intrigues me more than the flying swordplay aspects.

I love the turning 'who me?' shots - looks to have a million of them on the go.

That's a solid supporting cast right there, if the story is not a mess like Casshern, which almost put me to sleep, then this might actually be watchable.

I thought one of the biggest issues with Casshern was that Kiriya did the editing in addition to all his other duties, and I'm sad to see that on IMDB he's listed as the editor for Goemon as well. I think often times a movie benefits from a 2nd pair of eyes.

Man... my BluRay player was created for this. I know it.
