Korea Goes Noir With PRIVATE EYE

by Todd Brown, March 9, 2009 9:51 AM

How's this for a scenario: It is 1910 and you are a young medical student. While walking through the woods you discover a body and are faced with a decision. Do you report the finding to the police or do you take advantage of the opportunity and take the body home for study? Education is an important thing, you know. Now how about this for a wrinkle: After taking the body home you discover that the corpse is the son of a powerful gangster. Suddenly common sense reasserts itself and you take the body back to where you found it only to find - you guessed it - another body already there. It's time for professional help.

This is the setup for Private Eye, the upcoming - and as near as I can tell, debut - feature from Park Dae-Min. The film takes great advantage of it's period setting - the production values are stellar - as it fuses noir thriller tropes with more contemporary action styles in what looks like a potent stew. I can say this for sure: Park's got a great eye for talent, giving stellar support players Hwang Jeon-Min (Black House) and Ryu Deok-Hwan (Our Town) rare leading parts. The fantastic trailer is below the break.
