Talk amongst ourselves: Star Wars horror novel 'Deathtroopers' gets a cover!

by Andrew Mack, January 27, 2009 9:19 AM

The punchline is almost too easy. A horror Star Wars novel? But wasn't that the novelization of the movie prequels? Followed by a hearty and guttural 'Hey-oh' for emphasis. But, this would appear to be the real deal. One of the upcoming novels in this thing called the EU [Expanded Universe] is going to be a horror novel. Details are slim to none but I thought I would at least share the cover art with you as it suggests a Saw-like horror what with the chains and hooks and such. That is the soup de jour. Below is what the author, Joe Schreiber, has to say about his book over on his blog.

I had the time of my life on this one, I have to say. I'm doing the final edits now, and I've tried to make it into exactly the kind of book you'd want to read if you were a child of the 70s who grew up with the original Star Wars trilogy and really digs horror in the vein of The Shining and Alien, with a little dose of William Gibson mixed in.

This novel is due out just before Halloween on October 27th. We don't talk about books a lot around these parts. But given the source material and context I thought we would at least have something to say about this mash of genres. I've cruised around a couple of forums looking for more information about this book and the nerds are loving it.

By the way, this just goes to show how long I have been out of the Star Wars loop, when the hell did they kill off Chewbacca in these EU novels?!?

They killed Chewbacca?! Those bastards!

The way they killed Chewie was the only way Chewie would ever be able to down and have fans not be too upset.

Other then that, the book series that it occurred in, in my opinion, was pretty god awful.

"Saw-like horror what with the chains and hooks and such"

Yes because Saw is the only horror movie in history to have and use Chains and Hooks and Such. Putz.

Aha ha ha ha ha! Gold.
Hell hath no fury like a star wars/horror nerd scorned.

And in the future Mack, make sure you list every horror film that features chains and hooks when talking about this book. Makes for a much better read.

Indeed. I thought keeping it relevant to a modern horror film was enough but gosh darn it I should have at least included hellraiser, the cell, and ichi the killer, for that matter. Didn't think I would have to submit an entire thesis on the implementation chains and hooks in the horror film genre, but there you go. Sometimes one film reference just isn't enough for some people.

Thrawn trilogy was pretty good. The rest (I fear) is Pandering, Pandering, Pandering junk that probably serves better as firelogs than as actual reading diversion.

Chewy was killed while Anakin Solo was still a teenager and still on the side of the force, at least from what I can remember. The expanded universe novels are really hit-and-miss. It is hard to recommend the books, comics, etc as a general rule, but there are a couple good eras.
