This is so long overdue it's not even remotely funny. After years of toiling in the B-ranks Australian stylist Russell Mulcahey could finally be getting his shot at prime time with upcoming action flick Courier. Despite helming the original - and should have been only - Highlander, a cult classic that has easily survived its subsequent bastardization, Mulcahey has never really been able to attract a-list talent or scripts but with Adrien Brody in the lead of his latest that could be changing ...
A million bucks, just to a deliver a briefcase...It's a job too good to be true, especially if you're the COURIER, a daredevil carrier renowned for taking on impossible missions who's never, ever missed a drop. The only catch is delivering it to someone who can't be found, not even by the FBI, and when that someone is the notorious, never seen King of the Underworld EVIL SIVLE who's very name makes the toughest tremble, there's a lot more than reputation and money on the line.
With a baying pack of double crossing feds, conniving crooked cops and ruthless rival crime bosses in hot pursuit, the Courier trail blazes a world-wide chase for the most wanted man in the land. Drugged, beaten, tortured and two timed, the bloodhound bagman discovers easy money was never so hard, and tracking the elusive kingpin to Las Vegas learns just why Evil is the one person on the planet no one can find, and why he really is the King...
The plot has some obvious similarities to the setup for the Transporter films but Brody is in a whole different class than Jason Statham and with a script from the writers of 3:10 To Yuma and Wanted this could be something rather good. The film is in pre-production now, more as we get it.

Sounds like a bit of the old 'shoot 'em up' in there too. Still, I like Mulcahey (His Resident Evil movie beats the tar out of P.W.S. Anderson's two films, not that it is great cinema or anything). Highlander still works quite well as a great genre pic. I like Adrien Brody's decent into genre-land these days. He has a lot of films on his plate.
He directed the best RESIDENT EVIL movie so far and that was a theatrical release that made a bunch of money and still he went right back to directing crappy TV movies and video schlock. He should consider firing his agent.
Wow, a lot of love for Mulcahey's RE flick. I hated it. Not as much as the second film in the series, but still... ugh. And yeah - I thought it was strange too how he ends up doing the DTV SCORPION KING sequel and some other dreck right after helming a theatrical release. Guess you can't fault the man for resting on his ass.
Anyway, I'm digging this because of Mulcahey (who I do like and who I do think deserves another shot - HIGHLANDER and RAZORBACK - 'nuff said) and the folks tapped as writers. Brody I could go either way on - I have yet to really enjoy him in anything besides THE VILLAGE.
Will definitely be keeping an eye on this one.
"He directed the best RESIDENT EVIL movie so far"
He directed RE Degeneration? Not that i know.
@ Collin - Have you seen Brody in The Pianist? That was a pretty amazing film, and he was great in it.
No mention of GIVE 'EM HELL, MALONE? The teaser is very early and rough but it looks to be the coolest Russell Mulcahey movie since HIGHLANDER, and Chris "Yes, My Older Brother Is Donnie" Yen radiates confidence in a mere handful of frames of film. Thomas Jane and Ving Rhames star but this is teaser is so early, there's no Ving Rhames footage yet. I just uploaded it.
I'm with Caterpillar on this one - Mulcahy's Resident Evil movie is by far the best of the series. Not that there's much competition, but still.
With Brody starring in this and Argento's GIALLO, I'd say it's him that's slumming in the (sub) B-list rather than Mulcahey entering the A-list.
Video system is having problems processing Give 'Em Hell, Rhythm-X. I'm re-encoding it to try again ...
Squiggly - I have seen THE PIANIST. Just didn't do it for - but I understand that it's a well-respected film and Brody's perf was highly-praised. There's just something about him. I'm that way with Ed Norton too - most people love him, but for me he's been good in only one or two roles thus far. Just my bizarr-o tastes:)
