Let me be very clear about this. Natasha Arthy’s Fighter is a film we think very, very highly of around these parts so when I put the words 'misleading' and 'awesome' in the same sentence I don't want you thinking that the brand new UK trailer for the picture is misleading when it comes to quality. It's not, this film is fantastic. It's just that this new trailer makes it look like some sort of vigilante justice film rather than the coming of age picture that it actually is.
In Fighter Arthy went out and got herself an actual, national champion martial artist - who also turned out to be one very fine actress - and built a story around her skills and the fact that being a young Turkish woman in Denmark trying to make her way in a dominantly male sport does not play well with conservative elements of her ethnic culture. It's a sterling bit of work on a story level, one that integrates the martial arts tightly into the characters rather than simply bouncing from fight scene to fight scene. Though with Crouching Tiger's Xian Gao on board as choreographer they certainly could have done that, too, if they'd wanted.
But I digress ... Momentum Pictures are releasing this on DVD in the UK in early February. You'l find the trailer below the break.

Wow, this looks great. and if its got some heart too boot, then count me in twice. add a strong female lead, who knows how to kick ass, well that pretty much is the trifecta of sweetness =)
Yes this is very misleading indeed. "In a city that doesn't care"?
I guess if they sold it as a film about cultural and racial clashes in a modern city, from the viewpoint of a young girl then I guess less people would be interested.
This movie is one of the surprises I saw at Fantastic fest...
When is it releasing R1!? WHEN WHEN WHEN!!!!??? (okay, no snide remarks about not owning a regionless DVD player. I don't have the budget to, or otherwise that sweet piece of machinery would be mine all mine!)
I have wanted to see this since the trailer showed up on the site. GAH.
Horrible trailer for a great film. Definitely a fantastic fest surprise.
Loved it.
wow, they really made an awful trailer for a great movie. The Danish trailer is the one they should be playing. Great film, one of the best of the year. Just order the Danish DVD - it's anamorphic, Danish DD 5.1/DTS, and English subtitles. All of excellent quality.
