The Twitch Video Player salutes the 80s action film! Beefcake!

by Andrew Mack, December 18, 2008 7:23 AM

Soon my pets. Soon. The Twitch Video player is getting its knobs and whistles fine tuned and will be 'fully operational' and most importantly fully interactive for you, our loyal readership. In the meantime let me cure your video player woes with a generous helping of home cooked Beefcake. Just the way mom made it when we were all kids.

Can say for sure what got me thinking about action films from the 1980s. Maybe it's just all the remake announcements, continuation of film franchises that just won't die, or looking at all those John Carpenter trailers from years long ago. So I started looking at trailers for all those action films that I loved when I was a young lad up to 'here' on my father and it turns out that they all came about in the late 80s. Very likely this connection with the end of the decade marked my parent's presumed rise in maturity, thus allowing me to shape my morals and worldview through the sites of an MP5 machine gun!

Here are my favorites from the end of that wondrous decade.

Aliens 1986 - Not quite ready to see this in the cinema it would be a couple years later before I watched this in the wee hours in the morning at a friends house. By myself. Nearly jumped out of my skin when Newt sprinted from her hole in the wall.

Predator 1987 - Arnold had been around for a while and this was as good as any introduction as one could wish for.

Robocop 1987 - One month later this was one of those first action films that I got to see in the cinema. Great memories of standing in line and catching the buzz of the patrons coming out of the cinema from the early show.

Die Hard 1988 - The following year though I was absolutely taken by this action film. Perfectly balancing comedy and action when I watched this film I was in heaven.

Tango and Cash 1989 - By far not the greatest of the bunch but I still have a soft spot for this film. Then quite the opposite when Teri Hatcher is on the screen. Titter!

This is awesome. I don't think I'd ever seen the Aliens one before. I was too young to see it in the theatre by I remember vividly my sisters talking about if after they had - how jealous I was!

Funny how the music in the Robocop one is from Terminator.

The Predator trailer does not do nearly a good enough job to highlight how sweet that movie is.

And I too was rather surprised at the Terminator theme being used for Robocop. Guess all androids and cyborgs get down to the same beat!
