Sundance 2009 Announces Their Competition Slate!

by Todd Brown, December 4, 2008 6:37 AM

Aw, crap. I'd been giving some serious thought to attending the 2009 Sundance Festival earlier this year and ended up opting against it. It's been a busy travel year I reasoned, and I was feeling ready to loiter about at home for a while. Well, the complete competition lineup just arrived and now I've got to rethink the whole thing. No mention of either Stingray Sam or Black Dynamite in this - not a surprise as both are in non-competitive sections - but there is a lot to get excited about.

Such as? Big Fan, written and directed by the writer of The Wrestler. Sin Nombre, a Spanish language number I've been hearing good buzz about. Nicholas Winding Refn's Bronson. Japanese philosophical scifi The Clone Returns To The Homeland. And - in a note that makes me ridiculously happy - The Maid, by young Chilean writer-director Sebastien Silva, whose debut film La Vida Me Mata I absolutely adore.

There's lots, lots more in there, too ...
