Some Thoughts On GHOST IN THE SHELL 2.0

by Todd Brown, December 26, 2008 5:46 AM

Yes, I'm stuck at the day job working a night shift on Christmas Day and had to do the same yesterday as well but what took the sting away a little was the mailman bringing me my copy of Ghost In The Shell 2.0, the completely re-animated version of Mamoru Oshii's classic. Now, I don't really want to get into the cell animation versus CG animation argument here - I'll say only that I'm proud to own both versions, will continue to own both versions and will continue to watch both versions - but I did want to make a few comments on this new edition.

First, it's gorgeous. If you're going to mess with a classic like this you'd better do a damn good job and Productin IG have. It looks and sounds fantastic with sterling attention paid to details, lighting, texture, etc. If this were a brand new release today I don't think people would be hailing the visuals as ground breaking or anything like that but it is certainly upper tier. Secondly, and much to my pleasure, the CG designs have clearly been based directly on the original drawings and not on the later Stand Alone Complex designs. It would have been cheaper and easier for them to use the SAC designs but sticking as close as possible to the original aesthetic was definitely the correct choice. Third? This film is every bit as powerful and relevant today as it was when it was first created. The story hasn't aged a bit.

If you want a taste of what this looks liek I've got two teasers in the Twitch Player below the break.

I got my copy on Monday and was pretty disappointed with the PQ of the 2.0 BD. I was expecting some serious improvement over the 'old' 1.0 BD, but with all the added blurriness and blooming they wiped out so many details and grain. :(
I agree that it looks more like 'modern' Anime now but it also lost a lot of personality in my eyes. I think I'll stick to the original version for my next viewings.

Personally, I don't like the look of this version. I like the grainness of the original and if anything, I'll only buy the blu-ray version of the original (though it seems to be awfully expensive...).

Meh. Cheap way to make money. I'd rather they make new SAC than mess around with 'updating' the classic.

I not only hate the look of the cgi parts, but it also makes the film feel disjointed.
An insult to the original is what it is.

What irritates me the most about the 2.0 version is that I preordered it as soon as you guys, but it still hasn't arrived!

I want to gripe along with the rest of you OR disprove you with utter disdain. This uncertainty makes me mad...

The Blu-Ray of the original version wipes the floor with the filtered-to-hell 2.0 Blu-Ray. It's also not been completely re-animated. Only a couple choice scenes were redone. I like about 2 out of 10 changes. Needless to say, I'll stick with the 1.0 original. 2.0 is just a wacky "bonus feature" IMO.

You can get the special edition blu ray that comes with the 2.0 and the original movie plus a bonus cd soundtrack and other stuff too...

I thought the whole thing was redone in CG. Needless to say, I was surprised when I actually started WATCHING the thing...

Watched the BD version last night and it's still one of the best anime films out there, but agree that this really wasnt necessary. There are only a couple of scenes that has been updated. Hope production ig will another SAC out soon, cause it's hands down the best anime show EVER...

Honestly, I don't understand the interest about making a new version with CG animation (Maybe for money?). Why remaking a anime like that? Now they should make Innocence 2.0 and why not Patlabor 2.0 and Patlabor 2 2.0.....
