First Teaser For Yudai Yamaguchi's ELITE YANKEE SABURO

by Todd Brown, December 8, 2008 1:26 AM

Saburo has a problem. He's a quite, shy, awkward, bookish sort of kid, traits that are no help socially to anyone about to enter their first year of high school. He could expect to have a rough time in any school but it gets worse because Saburo isn't attending just any school, he's going to Tokumaru Gakuen High School, a school notorious for housing rowdy delinquents, exactly the sort least likely to appreciate Saburo for who he is. Worse yet, two of the biggest delinquents in Tokumaru Gakuen's history were Saburo's elder brothers, both of whom have been expelled and who left behind a loyal band of followers eager to have Saburo step in and fill the leadership gap left by their departure. This aint going to be easy.

Hmm ... awkward boy leading a school full of delinquents in a series of rowdy, violent, comedic adventures in a film based on a manga and directed by Yudai Yamaguchi. Yes, you'll be forgiven for thinking that this is pretty much a note for note return by Yamaguchi to territory already covered in Cromartie High School but considering that film is by far my favorite of Yamaguchi's output so far - pretty comfortably outstripping cult hits Battlefield Baseball and Meatball Machine - I'm okay with that.

The first teaser for Yamaguchi's latest has arrived online and you can check the requisite goofiness below the break.

Woah did I catch a glipmse of Riki Takeuchi in there? Looks as crazy as Kamikaze Girls.

I gotta do some digging but, yeah, I'm pretty sure Riki is in this. Check the big splash screen on the official site, it looks like he's tucked away in there.

And Brad ... I'm with you on the Yudai / Kitamura thing ... I've done nothing but becoem more and more convinced that the success of Versus has less to do with Kitamura than he's commonly given credit for and more to do with Tak, Yudai and the fight choreographer (whose name has slipped my mind) who went on to direct Death Trance. There were a lot of very unique talents involved in that film and Kitamura has never been as entertaining since they all went their seperate ways ...

I actually like Final Wars a whole lot but I know I'm in the minority on that and totally get where you're coming from. And Kitamura's really in no position to be criticizing Death Trance ... it's buckets more fun than the huge majority of his output.

Yudai is obviously the one with talent, Kitamura is a hack that just got lucky with Versus. That said, i think Alive is not that bad, and even better than Versus.

Oh, don't worry mate.
I'm a fan of the big G I own a copy of Final Wars. It's nice to see a massive budgeted Japanese Godzilla film...I just wish Kitamura had focused more on the creatures and less on the annoying people.

I love Sky High..so, I can't smack around the dude much at all...
