First Footage for THE STORM WARRIORS

by Al Young, December 24, 2008 2:45 PM

A "Top Secret" footage for the Pang Brothers martial arts fantasy The Storm Warriors has been posted online at the official site. The footage features a scene of two vast army colliding into battle with a black, white and red color tone in the background. From what we seen the Pang Brothers has done before, it shouldn't come as a surprise that we're in for some heavy CG visuals but it seems this may take the cake.

The release date is December 2009. You'll find the footage and the teaser below after the jump.

I hate to say this ( been a closet fan of the original film, most of my friends hated it), but the new footage looks like a blatant rip off of 300's action sequences, with less than impressive execution. Is this a work in progress ?

My first thought when I saw the footage is it looks alot like 300 except its in an ancient China setting. The Storm Warriors is shot entirely in a digital backlot so its similar in that regard. Its unclear on whether this is a work in progress/test shot or actual film footage. I extracted the video from the official site at the "Top Secret" section and there was no context info tag along with it.

it sure looks like 300 in ancient china. yet the style suits the wuxia-inspired mythic world very well (which is why all those freeze-frames, slow-mo in Ashes of Time were so jaw-dropping the 1st time: jing yong perfectly visualized!) maybe a little more fluidity in the movements beyond just purely slow-mo, waiting on them forever to finish hacking each other or something!

Why are we watching 300 with chinese soldiers? I dont like what I am seeing so far... =(

Why a year away? I was hoping for a early 2009 release. I personally like the look of the battle scenes. It might be a 300 ripoff but it works for me.

Let me say that I still like Legend of Zu but this...this would strain my patience. WTF?

Looks like 300 as others have noted, the worst parts of LoZ, mixed with Ralph Bakshi's shitty Lord of the Rings cartoon.

(Yeah, I know parts of it were good but the majority of Bakshi's work in that film was crap -- rotoscoping gone amok!)

If this delivers a great story with great characters, it can look like terminator to me, still if it has something to tell me, I dont care if it's a rip of or not. Bytheway, everything is a ripoff of a ripoff. So let's consider the visual CGI style as the mekka for every filmmaker in the new millenium.
And that won'z change soon, as the possibilities are borderless.

I saw this footage much larger and much higher res at the AFM and it looks gooooood big.

oh, so this is the footage that u saw at the AFM Todd? Did they have anymore footage we Twitch readers havent seen at the AFM. By the way, Todd is right. Check the 1080p HD trailer out at the official site and it looks much better. cant wait!

The Pang Bro's went all Frank Miller on us. And that is not a bad thing. Looks like an interesting take on Wuxia. Can't wait for a full trailer. Think I fell asleep during the original Fung Wan so hopefully this will be better.

Yeah, the first thing I thought was Ripoff of 300..but then after a while, I realize this is a Hk movie production..and this is 1000 steps above the pass Legend of Zu crappy CG movies... and after giving the teasers another look, i thought it looked quite cool. The only thing I am really worried about is when the action stops..legend of zu still gives me NIGHTMARESSSSS!!!!
