Oh god, this brings back horrible memories of the atrocious Super Mario Bros live action from 93'... I am huge fan of the original dragonball series, having watched the Japanese version in its entirety, and I cannot find anything about this movie thats worth defending against the thousands of voices screaming for its execution. I think I'll watch it, and then laugh as it hopefully burns in movie hell.
Certainly doesn't look good, but I can easily see 10-13 year boys olds eating this shit up. Grown men complaining about it seems kind of redundant. It was a pretty stupid cartoon to begin with. Something ya'll loved when you were 10 or 13.
I used to watch quite a bit anime and was still never able to get the craze behind Dragon Ball.
I remember the show being really silly with exhuastive fights like that one between Goku and Freeza lasting a good 7 or 8 episodes. I just don't get the fandom on this one. Never did.
The movie sure does look stupid, but it honestly doesn't looks any worse than Forbidden Kingdom.
Yeah, Forbidden Kingdom had some suprising albeit incredibly awkward nods to classic, semi obscure Shaw Brothers films... The one line at the end with "come drink with me." place a smile on my face and than cringed in its horribly awkward useage. And it looked pretty for the most part, it was still awful turd and horrifically depressing that it's the only time we'll see Jet Li and Jackie Chan face off. Both past their prime and having to rely on wire fu, stunt doubles and bad CGI.
Honestly, this Dragon Ball flick looks servicebal as fan service. I can't possibly imagine anyone who's not already a fan of the series being enticed by the trailer unless their a middle school aged boy. Which I think is going to be the main demographic.
Although, I thought the same of Speed Racer and that bombed horrifically. Even though I personally loved it.
hmm not that bad. or maybe i'm just tired of wincing (that and there are bigger pressing screw-ups in the world? :D ) right, there's still no substitute for JCVD vs. raul julia :P
This movie target are kids between 10 and 13--- Sol I don't rally care that much if it really suc. Even Though I Watch A lot of Anime... And What will you have expected when it is made in the USA...
Dragonball has great Potential.
True, it's something for kids, but with FX/Cinema-Revolutionaries of Today one could create a fantastic movie. Someone like Stephen Chow eg.could bring that along. i think he tried to create something like that with Kung-Fu Hustle, which has some similarities to Dragonball.
By the way somebody seen the Real-Live version from HK (made in the 80ies)?
The Dragon Ball era with goku as a kid was the fun one, everything after that was dull and generic as hell.
About the trailer: the godamn plane has crash into the mountain. Funny thing that this crap almost make you forget that there's a new Street Fighter movie coming out next year, with that Smallville chick as Chun Li. I declare 2009 the big year of MST3K cinema.
I don't think you could ever really satisfy a real DB fan (of which I am not one) but this trailer looks like a huge slap in the face. Without the actual dragonballs, you could have called this anything. Looks like this might actually be worse than SF, since SF was unintentionally funny and this just looks like a serious and bloody awful mess.
Chow better be getting paid a hefty sum for this one. What has happened to his career?
This is ridiculous!!! But its what I expected. Did anyone have any hope for this movie when it was proposed? I mean, how can someone when its DRAGON BALL.... HAHAHAHA
Jahsoldier is right, this looks as generic as anything I've seen. At least SF actually resembled the source material. At least Speed Racer had some of the energy and a similar sense of frivolity as the original.
I mean, what is this? Forbidden Kingdom 2? The new Terminator film? Another Rush Hour movie? Another Matrix? Perhaps it's a sequel to another one of Jet's Hollywood films from a 5-10 years back...
I would agree that it will hit it's target market, but at that age I can remember looking up the few scraps of info available about the LotR films, and actually sort of knowing who Peter Jackson was when he was announced, so I don't really believe kids these days are gullible enough to eat this stuff up without complaining.
Personally, I think that Dragon Ball is virtually impossible to adapt to live action. There's a more literal approach to the whole thing (anyone saw the chinese version from the nineties?) and it sucked real bad.
I was a huge fan of the anime in my teen years, and I'm not watching this "Evolution" crap.
Well, every frame of this trailer looks like crap. My heart aches, as I want to see Chow on a big screen again, but since Tiger and Dragon, there wasn't any chance to, you guess why.
And as I said earlier- Dragonball (the original one of course)has it's potential.
Now GOEMON Trailer arrives, and you see what could be visually possible + they should put Stephen Chow on the Directors Chair (Since at least his humour is similiar). But instead we get this Matrix/CGI-Wire Fu-inspired peace of sh...
The worst is the Cast of son Goku, at least he could dy his hair black, instead being blond. Nothing is here true in any ways to the original, so why call it Dragonball?

Damn, even the poster is terrible.
Good grief, I don't know if I should laugh or cry.
man...fetch has it down...
I personally am reminded of the Street Fighter live action movie.
Looks like a big budget TV movie.
Glad I'm not a fan of the show. If I were one of the actors I would have been pushing for them to just kill the movie.
Skanky Real World cast member is all I needed to see to write this one off... the kids on the db message boards seem excited though.

Oi. Ick.
Street Fighter live action had no action. At least this has poorly executed action scenes.
One last comment...
Blech.
