Poet-Turned-Filmmaker Yu Ha Returns With A FROZEN FLOWER

by Todd Brown, November 28, 2008 2:54 AM

With Korea's film industry in a bit of disarray right now you'd think the pressure would have been in Yu Ha to play it safe. The director of Once Upon A Time In High School - in which he drew what is still a career best performance out of heart throb Kwon Sang Woo - and A Dirty Carnival is, after all, one of the nation's surest bets right now - one of a small handful of local directors who consistently manage to please both audiences and critics. But Yu would have none of it. Perhaps emboldened by the success of the gay-themed The King And The Clown, coupled with his regular star Zo In-sung about to drop out of the industry for a couple of years while performing his mandatory military service anyway Yu opted to leave the safe comforts of what he had done before and instead make a grand, large scale, gay themed character drama in which Zo would star as a gay bodyguard to the Korean king.

So far the gamble seems to have paid off. Though it has not yet screened anywhere to my knowledge the film made advance sales totaling over one and a half million dollars in just three territories at the recently wrapped American Film Market, totals that haven't been seen since the Korean Wave was still riding high, and anticipation among locals seems good. And sure to stoke that anticipation is the just-released theatrical trailer, which you'll find below the break.
