New Trailer for Sion Sono's LOVE EXPOSURE

by Rodney Perkins, November 13, 2008 11:35 AM

Sion Sono's latest film Love Exposure (Ai no mukidashi) is scheduled for special screenings at Tokyo Filmex later in the month. The Tokyo Filmex program describes the film as an "epic love story," about a young man who "devotes himself to wrongdoing and becomes a legend of sneak photography" after confessing his sins to his priest father. After meeting a young girl, he becomes involved in a religious cult. This description, combined with the film's 237 minute running time, indicates that something very strange is a foot. This suspicion is backed up by the film's new trailer (Japanese language), which lies beneath the fold.

Four hours of that? No thanks...but maybe. It does appear to include a lot of underskirt shots of Japanese school girls, and I know we've all spent close to four hours in one night looking at pictures of that on the internet. I'm just kidding, what are underskirt shots? Heck, what are Japanese school girls?

Woah. I don't know.... But I'll say this much, God I miss Tokyo.... F*cking christ. It's amazing that stuff like this gets produced and released on a pretty consistent basis.

Sion Sono is hit or miss. Sucide Club = Brilliant. Norikio's Dinner Club = genius. Strange Circus= haven't decided yet, too uneven. Exte= hmmmmm, even more uneven.

This looks pretty damn uneven as well. But that's partly Sono's charm, true anarchy in tone and theme. Some of the stuff in this trailer looks batshit nuts and awesome, some of it looks wacky and grating.

Close to 4 hours though? Noriko's Dinner table was nearly 3 and as much as I LOVED that film, it was an hour too long. Not sure I could handle 4. Yet, I'll still end up seeing this I'm sure.

Hahaha, what is he doing. This is such a risk, but could be an amazing one.

I actually thought SUICIDE CIRCLE was uneven, although I love it. And I agree that NORIKO'S DINNER TABLE is good but way too long. STRANGE CIRCUS and EXTE ("Heâ, heâ, my heâ!") are my two faves, so far.

In any case, my interest is piqued. Hopefully it'll remained piqued for four damn hours.

I like how the running time is prominently featured in the trailer; its like the cult version of Che. Whats with Female Convict Scorpion teaming up w/the high school girl? I love it.

Yikes. Can't decide whether or not this looks like complete guff or solid gold. Film lovers often maintain that running time isn't a factor but I find it always is and 4 hours is pretty damn scary. Sono is 2/1 in my book - loved Noriko and couldn't get along with Circle or Circus at all. Hmmmm..

This looks like great fun, actually! I have no idea how or if he can keep it up for 4 hours but I'm curious. In the meantime, there are still a couple of his films that aren't even out with English subtitles yet: INTO A DREAM and HAZARD.

i thought Strange Circus was too long so im not sure id like this, i didn't mind the runtime on Norikio’s cause it had an interesting plot to keep my attention. hmmm....not sure on this one
