The Russian Farce Boom Continues With BEST MOVIE 2

by Todd Brown, October 29, 2008 9:46 PM

Not being incredibly familiar with the history of recent Russian popular film - recent in this case ranging from ten to fifty years ago - I really couldn't tell you if this recent wave of slapstick comedies is a new thing or a continuation of an old tradition but I can definitely say that there has been a huge spike in Zucker Brothers style comedy in Russia over the past couple years, films loaded with slapstick, physical humor, broad parody and as much coarse humor as could reasonably be jammed in. And this style of humor is so wildly at odds with the way Russia is perceived in this part of the world that there's just something strangely compelling about it all.

And the latest entry into the Russian farcical canon is Best Movie 2, which pokes fun at several recent Russian hits. Yes, familiarity with the source material will help but the trailer looks like goofy fun even without that. You'll find it below the break in the Twitch Player.

Soviet comedies, off course, had farce and slapstick elements, but humour in Soviet comedies was much more delicate, than in modern comedies. "The Russian Farce Boom" is a result of American influence. I feel shame about that.

I found it well amusing, the first part. Yes, it's not typical Russian humar, but dint forget that the movie industry (as well as whole country) has changed dramatically in the last years. Now, its sort of "experimental stage" when new wage Russian directors trying out new "genres", its absolutly normal. I dont think critique is usefull in this case. Let it be..and enjoy the process
