Confession time? Confession time.
On one of my first days at the recently completed Fantastic Fest I rode the guest shuttle to some screening or event or other with Belgian director Pieter Van Hees, who was there with his film The Left Bank, an arty little psychological thriller that I'd heard great things about and was looking forward to. As we got chatting about the film I was quick to assure him that I had it one my schedule and was planning on catching the first screening. And then, because I'm an idiot, I missed it. And then the next day we ended up riding on the bus together again. And Pieter offered to give me a screener of the film. No, no, I assured him, I'll catch the second screening. And then, because I'm an idiot, I missed that one, too. So, sorry, Pieter, I still haven't seen your first film. I'm an idiot. I have, however, just seen the trailer for his second film and it looks like far more fun than should be allowed.
Titled Dirty Mind the film tells the story of poor, introverted Diego, who struggles with the ladies and his own self esteem until, one day he gets into a serious car accident and suffers brain damage. But wait! Brain damage can be fun! When Diego awakes he insists on being called Tony T and takes on a new life as a smooth talking stunt man. Now, the premise alone is a lot of fun but what really makes this unusual is the way Van Hees shoots it. The cinematography was one of the great drawing cards of The Left Bank, Van Hees' shooting style reminding me greatly of Chistoffer Boe's first two films** - a great compliment in my book - and that style carries through this film as well. So what you have is a full on action comedy, complete with explosions and major stunt sequences, shot like a high art film. And, damn, does it ever look fantastic.
We've got the trailer below the break in the Twitch Player.

I loved Left Bank, a lot.
