Whenever a new project is announced from Production I.G, all it takes for our ears to perk up is just from the simple fact that the animation studio's name alone is attached. As one of the leading studio in Japan that produce some of the most cutting edge animation including Blood: The Last Vampire and Ghost in the Shell, we can expect nothing less than high quality production. This time around, Production I.G is making its first foray into a full CG animated feature film entitled Hottarake no Shima - Haruka to Maho no Kagami (tentative English title: Oblivion Island: Haruka and the Magic Mirror). The director is Shinsuke Sato (Princess Blade) who is making his debut in animation and the screenplay is written by Hirotaka Adachi. According to the studio's official site, the plot will follow a teenage girl named Haruka as she discovers where all of our lost childhood keepsakes and memorabilia has gone. Heres the overview:

Your favourite teddy bear. That model kit that took so long to complete. The picture book you used to read over and over again. The shining stone you found that day in the park. Where do all your childhood's treasures go when you grow up? In this story, we meet fantastic creatures that gather all these little objects that fall into oblivion as they are forgotten by their owners when they step into adulthood. These creatures sneak into our world from a different dimension, and unseen by humans, they take all the ditched and forgotten "treasures" into their world. Here, they use their booty to build their own city, a fairy tale-like place called... Oblivion Island!

The movie will be distributed in Japan by Toho Co., Ltd. and the Japanese theatrical release is slated for summer 2009.
