From The Pen Of Joko Anwar: Love Goes Horribly Wrong In FIKSI

by Todd Brown, October 19, 2008 8:55 AM

We have been very vocal supporters of Indonesia's Joko Anwar in these pages. As both a writer and director - particularly with his films Joni's Promise and Kala - Anwar has established himself as the top talent in Indonesia thanks to his clever scripts and beautiful eye for composition. And though we're still waiting for Anwar's latest directorial effort The Forbidden Door - I'm told we should get a look at the trailer in November - Anwar has certainly not been idle. Far from it.

In addition to working on his own film, Anwar recently wrote the script to a dark romance titled Fiksi - it translates to Fiction - for his friend Mouly Surya, a young female director still in her twenties. In describing the film to me Anwar was quick to praise Surya's eye, which is high praise indeed coming from him and very obviously deserved once you take a look at this thing. Beautifully shot, designed with a keen eye for detail, and put together so rhythmically that it almost lulls you into missing the fact that the title character's "love" for her neighbor is actually a dangerous and potentially violent obsession until it is almost too late, the trailer for Fiksi is compelling stuff that clearly heralds the arrival of a significant new talent.
