Just a few days ago I stumbled across the trailer for an upcoming Russian scifi animation film that I absolutely fell in love with but had no information on beyond the Russian title, День рождения Алисы. And so I threw it online with no explanation, hoping that someone out there would be able to fill me in and now my thanks go out to Ringafish and Rip1ey, who not only found the English title but also passed on a good amount of background information.
The film is Alice's Birthday, directed Sergey Seryogin and based on a series of hugely popular children's science fiction books by Kir Bulychev. Bulychev's novels inspired an earlier animated feature in 1981 and also a 1985 live action miniseries. And now there is this. And if this trailer is any indication of what Bulychev's work is all about then it's no great surprise to me that he's been a best seller in Russia for decades because this looks like all sorts of fun, loaded with surprising characters and incredibly energetic. Not only am I certain my boy would go nuts for this were it ever made available in English but I'm pretty sure I'd be a huge fan of the completed film as well.
As an added bonus, while tracking down the links sent in by our loyal readers I also managed to dig up two more video clips from the film. You'll find all three in the Twitch Player below the break.

that girl was the chief competitor of real girls in heart of every soviet boy )
soo... any sign of it being Englishified?
It will be finished in January, we should find out after that.
By the way the 1981 film mentioned above is Mystery of the Third Planet (Тайна третьей планеты - google it). This new film looks like it might be almost as good. Looking forward to it.
