Trailer For Chinese Mystery Thriller EQUATION OF LOVE AND DEATH Impresses

by Todd Brown, September 17, 2008 8:50 PM

I'm not certain how this one has stayed under the radar for so long, coming from major Chinese production house Huayi Brothers, but the official website for the upcoming multi-threaded mystery thriller Equation Of Love And Death has arrived online, boasting a hugely impressive trailer. With a multi-pronged plot that threads seemingly disconnected strangers into a drugs and murder related mystery and a polished but still kinetic camera style this one seemingly plays like equal parts P.T. Anderson and Michael Mann. Beyond the camera work this one's also noteworthy for it's approach to casting, focusing on landing solid dramatic actors rather than big, flashy names, which is an unusual approach in celebrity-mad Asia. But don't take my word for it, hit the link below for the English version of the official website - boasting detailed synopsis and cast info - and check the trailer below the break in the Twitch Player.

pretty interesting trailer, looks like the only thing that could ruin it for me is the over acting.

Don't be mistaken - this isn't multi-pronged or anything remotely approaching a PTA or Michael Mann film. I saw this last night and it really isn't very good, the score is pretty decent and Zhao Xun is reliable as ever but lord only knows why she chose to do the film as the script is arse. Instead of having multiple stories and inter-weaving narratives the film keeps introducing new characters and then just abandoning them, doing nothing with them, and moving on to the next dead end plot point. The first third starts out promisingly but is then just abandoned, leaving one character dead and another ignored, before introducing a potentially interesting cop, who then is forgotten about and having a third act so full of cliched coincidental plot twisting that it becomes almost amusing. Zhao is "uglied up" but then as the film goes on the director secretly adds her a little bit of make up so that by about halfway through she is looking cute again as he obviously didn't have the balls to keep her looking plain throughout.
Really not very good, save for the music and Zhao's performance....and it's relatively short, which helped.
