Remake Irony Ahoy!

by Todd Brown, September 30, 2008 9:45 AM

So, sitting here on the couch when I see a note over at Bloody Disgusting that they've got the brand new poster for DreamWorks Korean horror remake The Uninvited. "Hey!", I thought, "I didn't know anyone was remaking The Uninvited!" So I hopped over to check it out. And what do I learn? This Uninvited is the American remake of A Tale of Two Sisters. So, yes. The producers of this film bought the rights to one Korean film, decided they didn't like the original title and retitled it with the name of another Korean horror film. Irony ahoy!

Well, it's still a better title than A Tale of Two Sisters...

To be fair though, that's a solid one sheet. No complaints there.

The Weinsteins ought to sue Dreamworks, as they're the originators of this title thievery bullshit. How dare someone steal their title stealing gimmick?

I'm just glad i'm not watching this.

Omg... can Dreamworks get any worse? First they're going to make a remake of the WONDERFULLY PERFECT horror movie A Tale of Two Sisters. The title is perfect for the movie and fits so well. But now... they are taking another horror movie's title and slapping it on? I mean... WTF? Like ChevalierAquila said... I am SO glad I am not going to watch this.

I love A TALE OF TWO SISTERS, but I'll probably watch this redux anyway, knowing it likely won't be good. I'm a masochist, I guess.

I'll see it. I have a perverse fascination in seeing how ideas are distilled down until they're multiplex-friendly.

There was nothing particularly ground-breaking about ATOTS to begin with imo - just a well-made, thoughtful, scary movie. It's still possible for Hollywood to make one of those every now and then. Not saying I think this will be it, but it's not like the remake of, say, PULSE, which had no chance of ever digging at the cerebral ideas Kurosawa injected into the original.

I personally didn't like A TALE OF TWO SISTERS but then again, maybe I should rewatch it.

Same here. I didn't think A Tale was a masterpiece.

The fairy tale, (wicked stepmother, impotent father) aspects were so well handled in the movie. I thought there was a lot to chew on. the fact that it was delicately paced and gorgeous and had a couple top-not scares were icing. Also, the Korean LE disc of the movie is my 'sound demo' for my home theatre, BEST SOUND DESIGN in a horror movie PERIOD!

I didn't see the "twist" coming, and it hit me like a cannonball. Everything suddenly made sense and I wasn't so much horrified as saddened. This is a sad, sad movie.

Then again, so was "The Uninvited". Maybe this is an honest mixup?
(ducks and runs for the hills...)

When I heard the phrase "Remake Irony" I instantly thought of and expected some news on Frankenweenie, the film which Disney fired Tim Burton for making and are now paying him to remake.
