Hayao Miyazaki at the 65th Venice Film Festival

by Blake, September 1, 2008 5:48 AM

To date from the 65th Venice Film Festival we have shown you Coffin Joe, Fabrice Du Welz, Kaiju and now Hayao Miyazaki! A super size image of him at the festival today is at the link below and several more added super size images from Ponyo On The Cliff. Hayao Miyazaki was at Venice screening his latest work and proclaiming his steadfast and unending love for non-computer animation. He told reporters after the Ponyo screening:

"I think animation is something that needs the pencil, needs man's drawing hand, and that is why I decided to do this work in this way. Currently computer graphics are of course used a great deal and, as I've said before, this use can at times be excessive. I will continue to use my pencil as long as I can."

I love my cg films, but it's always great to see the good old 2d hand drawn style. to bad most companies have given up on it. At least Miyazaki is keeping the art alive.

I'm with Miyazaki 100%

I do love hand-drawn animation, but I can't help wondering if Miyazaki might be taking an indirect swipe at that other animated film from Japan competing at Venice this year.

I was at the general audience screening.
Probably not the best Miyazaki, but still a very very good one. May not be of everyone's taste because it's clearly adressed to younger audiences.
The reaction was awesome. Miya-san got about 10 minutes of standing ovation when entering the hall, and about the same when leaving after the movie. Almost every critic here agrees that it's the best movie of the festival yet, with many chances of winning the Golden Lion.

Let's hope this wonderful film bags the Golden Lion. When will the results be out ?
